The six Republican senators threatening to derail Trump: report

Six Republican senators: Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, Rand Paul, Lisa Murkowski, John Cornyn, and Thom Tillis, are forming an informal "Gang of Six" to oppose President Donald Trump on key votes and jeopardize his legislative priorities in the narrowly divided chamber.

Unlike previous Senate coalitions, this group has no official structure or fixed membership, aiming instead to constrain party overreach, wrote Wall Street Journal columnist Matthew Contenetti.

Trump's threats against GOP incumbents backfired, emboldening senators who no longer fear electoral consequences, particularly Cornyn and Tillis.

The group's growing influence is already evident: on an Iran resolution, their support swung the vote from 50-49 against to 50-47 in favor.

In addition to Republicans facing a crowded legislative calendar, any Supreme Court vacancy could expose Trump's vulnerability.

"Will history repeat? Come January, Mr. Trump may find he no longer controls the agenda," Contenetti wrote.

"But if the new Gang of Six continues to grow, he may lose control sooner than expected."
