Initia Is Back Online After the Exploit: What Risks Remain?

Initia halted its layer-1 network and connected rollups on October 23, 2026, at 15:41:30 UTC after detecting a security incident. The project later attributed the event to a vulnerability in its MoveVM implementation that allowed an attacker to create asset balances without valid backing.

Bitquery’s transaction analysis estimates that the attacker created balances with a nominal value of approximately US$7.48 million. About US$2.73 million in real assets reportedly left bridge reserves. The two figures measure different things and should not be added together.

Initia’s official status page reported all services online on October 28, 2026, at 01:58 UTC. Its mainnet, REST endpoint, RPC endpoint, and gRPC endpoint were marked operational.

Restoring the endpoints does not settle every financial consequence. Users still need evidence concerning bridge-reserve recovery, affected assets, deposit and withdrawal availability on their chosen platform, and the technical post-mortem explaining the fix.

What Happened Inside MoveVM?

Initia’s preliminary explanation linked the incident to script caching within MoveVM. Caching stores previously processed information so the system does not repeat the same work for each transaction.

A flaw in the implementation allegedly allowed malicious code to bypass certain security checks. The attacker could then create WETH, iUSD, and USDC balances without adding the underlying assets that should have backed them.

The relationship between account balances and total supply is central to the incident. According to the update attributed to Initia, the attacker created false balances without changing the corresponding total-supply records.

A total-supply check alone could therefore miss the problem. A blockchain may show an unchanged aggregate supply while an error in state accounting has credited unauthorized balances to a specific account.

Initia said the vulnerability did not mint native INIT. That statement narrows the affected minting mechanism, but it does not show that INIT’s price, network utility, or every application escaped disruption. Halting the chain also stopped ordinary INIT transfers and rollup activity during the response.

Why Do the US$7.48 Million and US$2.73 Million Figures Differ?

Bitquery separates the face value of the unauthorized balances from the real assets successfully withdrawn.

The attacker reportedly created about US$7.48 million in unbacked balances within 13 seconds. That amount assigns nominal value to the ledger entries. Part of it could not be converted because bridge reserves were limited or the network halted before the transfers completed.

Approximately US$2.73 million in real assets reportedly reached Ethereum through several bridge routes. Bitquery said the proceeds were consolidated into about 1,135.5 ETH in one wallet when it reviewed the transactions on October 23.

The simplified conversion rate is:

US$2.73 million ÷ US$7.48 million = approximately 36.5%

Around 36.5% of the nominal false balances were converted into real assets under those investigative estimates. This percentage is not a recovery rate or a final loss figure. The eventual loss depends on assets that are frozen, recovered, replaced, or remain inaccessible.

How Did False Balances Drain Bridge Reserves?

A bridge typically locks an original asset on one side and issues a representation on the destination network. The representation remains redeemable because a corresponding reserve is held elsewhere.

Suppose a bridge holds 1 million USDC and issues 1 million represented USDC on Initia. Each represented unit has one unit of backing as long as accounting and redemption function correctly.

A vulnerability that creates 2 million additional false balances produces claims against the same reserve without adding any backing. The attacker can send those balances to the bridge and request real assets from funds intended for legitimate users.

Bitquery reported that a USDC reserve on Noble fell from about US$1.09 million to US$63 at its lowest point. Its investigation also recorded 55 failed ordinary withdrawal attempts after the reserve was nearly depleted, although most were reportedly repeated submissions by one bot.

Depletion of one bridge route does not establish a global deficiency in all USDC reserves. The effect concerns a specific representation of the asset and the reserve pool used to exit Initia.

Four Risks That Still Need Evidence

The restart reduces the operational risk created by a chain halt. Several remaining questions require separate evidence.

A. State Integrity After the Restart

Validators need to run corrected software and agree on the network state used for recovery. Users need to know which block or state formed the restart point and how exploit transactions were handled.

Recovery options can include applying a patch without changing history, restricting specific assets, freezing addresses, or coordinating a state adjustment. Each option has different consequences for transaction finality.

An “operational” endpoint confirms that a service is responding. It does not establish that every affected balance has been reconciled or that every application is running the same corrected software.

B. Missing Bridge Reserves

Users holding represented assets on Initia need sufficient backing to exit to the original network. If an exploit depleted a bridge reserve, the relevant parties must identify how that backing will be restored.

Recovery could involve frozen assets, project treasury funds, bridge operators, asset issuers, insurance, or another arrangement. A final plan covering every affected reserve had not been fully documented in the sources reviewed.

A token balance displayed in a wallet is not the same as executable redemption value. The user also needs a functioning bridge route and adequate reserves.

C. Shared Risk Across the L1 and Rollups

Initia is a layer-1 network supporting application-specific rollups, often called Minitias. Individual rollups can use different execution environments and gas tokens while continuing to depend on parts of the shared infrastructure.

A vulnerability in shared software can have a wider reach than a bug isolated to one application. Initia halted both the base chain and related rollups while the team assessed the scope and restricted asset movement.

Each rollup still needs to confirm its software version, bridge condition, and asset status. A restored mainnet does not prove that every rollup and application has reached the same stage of recovery.

D. Trading and On-chain Transfers Are Different

INIT can continue trading on a platform that records customer balances internally. That activity does not prove that deposits and withdrawals through the Initia network are working.

The INIT/USDT market on MEXC reflects orders executed on MEXC’s order book. Users should separately inspect the deposit or withdrawal page and the latest platform announcement before initiating an on-chain transfer.

A platform can keep trading open while temporarily closing deposits and withdrawals. A moving price therefore cannot be used as evidence that external transfers are available.

What Does the Official Status Page Establish?

Initia’s status page showed “All services are online” at 01:58 UTC on October 28, 2026. Mainnet, router API, REST, RPC, gRPC, the application, and multisig services were listed as operational.

The 30-day uptime figures showed approximately 84.959% for the REST endpoint and 85.096% for the RPC endpoint. Those percentages are consistent with a multi-day disruption, although the page provides no details concerning transactions or asset recovery.

The distinction should remain explicit. A status page answers whether infrastructure responds. A post-mortem explains the cause, impact, and fix. Compensation or reserve replacement requires a separate recovery disclosure.

Why Would a Blockchain Halt?

Public blockchains are designed to keep producing blocks. A network-wide halt generally requires validator coordination or an administrative mechanism available within the protocol.

A halt can contain damage while an attacker is still creating balances or moving assets. Every additional block may allow more bridge reserves to be withdrawn.

The cost is substantial. Users cannot transfer assets, applications stop processing transactions, liquidation systems may be disrupted, and prices on trading venues can separate from conditions on-chain.

The decision reflects a trade-off between continued operation and damage containment. A fast halt limits further movement, while the quality of recovery depends on the patch, audit, validator coordination, state reconciliation, and replacement of missing assets.

Checks Before Using Initia Again

A green service indicator should not be the only test before resuming deposits, withdrawals, or application use.

Users can check the following:

  • Confirm that block height continues to increase.

  • Verify that the chosen platform has reopened Initia deposits and withdrawals.

  • Match the contract address and identify whether the asset is native or bridged.

  • Check the specific bridge route and its reserve condition.

  • Read the post-mortem and patch audit when published.

  • Look for a documented plan covering affected assets.

  • Begin with a small test transaction after every route has reopened.

  • Avoid unofficial refund, migration, or recovery pages.

A small test transaction reduces the effect of an address error or an unstable transfer channel. It does not remove smart-contract or reserve-shortfall risk.

Questions Still Requiring Answers

The status page says the network is online, but several disclosures are still needed to assess resolution:

  • The patch version and the exact code path changed.

  • The external auditor and scope of review.

  • The state or block height selected for restart.

  • The value of assets frozen or recovered.

  • The source used to replenish depleted bridge reserves.

  • Treatment of users whose withdrawals failed.

  • The status of each connected rollup and application.

  • Reopening times for deposits and withdrawals on individual platforms.

The absence of one final loss figure should remain visible in coverage. US$7.48 million represents Bitquery’s estimate of nominal false balances. US$2.73 million represents its estimate of real assets removed. Further recovery could change the net loss again.

Online Does Not Mean Fully Resolved

Initia has passed an initial recovery milestone because its official status page reports services as operational. The restart restores network access, but technical recovery differs from financial resolution.

The remaining risks concern state integrity, bridge backing, consistent patch deployment across the L1 and rollups, and the reopening of transfer channels. A published post-mortem and security audit will provide stronger evidence than INIT’s price or endpoint status alone.

Users planning to return should verify the exact route they intend to use. Mainnet, bridge, token contract, application, and platform deposit and withdrawal status are separate components and may recover at different times.
