Bitcoin Holds Near $81,000 After the Fed Keeps Rates Unchanged

Bitcoin traded near $81,000 after the Federal Reserve maintained its target rate at 3.75% to 4.00%. MEXC's BTC/USD page showed a 24-hour range between $80,509.18 and $81,906.69 on October 29, 2026. The difference between the low and high was approximately $1,397.51, or 1.74%.

The response was limited compared with the volatility that sometimes follows an FOMC decision. Bitcoin briefly approached $81,700, slipped below $80,500, and returned to the $81,000 area after the statement. The move suggests that traders had already incorporated much of the expected rate decision into prices.

The FOMC statement did not signal monetary easing. The Fed said economic activity was expanding at a strong pace while inflation remained elevated. Two of the 12 voting members preferred a 25-basis-point increase. That split vote weakens the interpretation that holding rates was automatically dovish for risk assets.

Bitcoin's next move will depend on PCE inflation, US economic growth, Treasury yields, the dollar, spot demand, and leveraged positioning. The $81,000 area therefore represents post-FOMC consolidation rather than confirmation of a new rally.

What did the Federal Reserve decide?

The FOMC maintained the federal funds target at 3.75% to 4.00% in a 10-to-2 vote. The decision followed a 25-basis-point increase at the September 2026 meeting.

Lisa D. Cook and Beth M. Hammack dissented from the majority decision. Both preferred another 25-basis-point increase in October. Their votes show that some committee members still viewed inflation as requiring tighter policy.

The official statement contained several points relevant to Bitcoin:

  • US economic activity continued to expand at a strong pace.

  • Domestic spending remained resilient.

  • Productivity growth and capital investment remained strong.

  • Job growth kept pace with growth in the labor force.

  • Inflation remained above the Fed's 2% objective.

  • The committee wanted more information before adjusting its policy stance.

Holding rates gives the Fed additional time to assess the effect of September's increase. It does not confirm that the tightening cycle has ended. The December decision will depend on inflation, growth, employment, and financial conditions.

Why did Bitcoin not surge?

Interest-rate decisions reach Bitcoin through several channels. Those channels may point in different directions, so price does not always move in line with the headline decision.

A. Traders expected the decision

Markets normally adjust before the FOMC announcement. When the result matches the dominant expectation, there is less scope for an immediate repricing.

Bitcoin could react more strongly if the Fed delivered an unexpected rate cut or provided guidance pointing to earlier easing. The October statement did not contain that kind of surprise.

A move from approximately $80,500 to $81,000 equals about 0.62%. This calculation uses two reported price points around the decision and is not a full-session return. A move of that size is also insufficient to establish a change in trend.

B. Two officials wanted higher rates

The 10-to-2 vote adds information that the word "hold" does not convey. Two voting members believed a further rate increase was appropriate.

Dissents do not determine the next decision, but they reveal the range of views within the committee. Expectations for a December increase could rise if subsequent inflation data remain firm.

Bitcoin often faces a more difficult environment when the expected rate path moves higher. Yield-bearing dollar assets become more attractive, funding costs rise, and leveraged speculative positions become more expensive to maintain.

C. Yields and the dollar provided limited support

The federal funds rate is not the only price of money that affects crypto. Traders also monitor two-year and ten-year Treasury yields because they reflect policy expectations and term premiums.

The two-year yield initially rose after the FOMC announcement. That reaction indicates that part of the market interpreted the statement and press conference as maintaining a restrictive policy stance.

A stronger dollar can weigh on Bitcoin in two ways. Global liquidity becomes more expensive in other currencies, while investors receive higher returns from dollar instruments without accepting crypto volatility.

The relationship is not fixed. Bitcoin can still rise alongside the dollar if spot purchases, institutional flows, or crypto-specific catalysts outweigh the macro pressure.

D. Leverage affects the quality of a rally

A price increase can come from new spot purchases or from short sellers closing positions. Both appear as an upward move on a chart, but their durability may differ.

A short squeeze occurs when rising prices force bearish traders to close. Forced buying can push the market higher without creating lasting new demand. Once the liquidation process ends, the move may reverse.

Open interest, funding rates, spot volume, and liquidations should be read together. A rally supported by healthy spot volume and controlled open interest usually has a firmer structure than one dominated by leveraged positions.

What does the $80,509 to $81,907 range indicate?

MEXC's 24-hour range shows Bitcoin trading within a relatively narrow band compared with larger volatility events. The 1.74% difference indicates consolidation, but it does not guarantee that volatility will remain low.

The $80,509 low marks an area where buyers responded to selling pressure. One 24-hour period is insufficient to classify it as strong support. Support requires repeated tests, sufficient volume, and the ability to hold through subsequent catalysts.

The $81,906 high is also not permanent resistance. It is better treated as a short-term reference for evaluating whether buyers can extend the move.

Three developments can clarify the price structure:

  • Sustained closes above the 24-hour high, accompanied by stronger spot volume.

  • Repeated failures near $81,900 while open interest rises quickly.

  • A break below $80,500 accompanied by long liquidations and heavy selling volume.

These figures are observation levels rather than price targets. Liquidity and macro conditions can change faster than technical levels.

Four data points that matter next

The FOMC decision has passed, but upcoming information will shape expectations for the December meeting.

A. PCE inflation

The Bureau of Economic Analysis scheduled its September Personal Income and Outlays release for October 29, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. New York time, or approximately 7:30 p.m. WIB. The report contains the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index used extensively by the Fed in assessing inflation.

A reading above expectations could increase the probability of a December rate rise. A weaker reading could reduce that pressure, although one report would not determine Fed policy on its own.

B. US gross domestic product

The advance estimate for third-quarter GDP was scheduled for the same time. Strong growth would indicate that the economy can absorb higher borrowing costs, giving the Fed more room to keep policy restrictive.

Weaker growth could pull yields and the dollar lower. Bitcoin's reaction would still depend on whether traders interpret the weakness as a reason for easier policy or as evidence of rising recession risk.

C. Spot demand

Futures volume can amplify intraday moves, but spot demand is more useful for judging whether buyers are increasing their underlying exposure.

Traders can compare price changes with spot volume, order-book depth, and flows into Bitcoin investment products. A rise without broader spot demand is more vulnerable to losing momentum.

D. Funding rates and open interest

A positive funding rate means long traders pay short traders in perpetual futures. A rapid increase can indicate that the long side is becoming crowded.

Rising open interest alongside price may represent new derivatives exposure. The combination becomes riskier when funding is elevated and spot volume fails to expand. A modest decline can then trigger a chain of long liquidations.

How should Indonesian investors read the move?

Bitcoin's rupiah value depends on two variables: the US-dollar price of BTC and the USD/IDR exchange rate. Bitcoin can remain flat in dollars while rising in rupiah if the Indonesian currency weakens.

A simple illustration using a Bitcoin price of $81,000 shows the difference:

  • An exchange rate of IDR 18,000 per US dollar produces a value of approximately IDR 1.458 billion per BTC.

  • An exchange rate of IDR 18,183 produces a value of approximately IDR 1.473 billion per BTC.

  • The exchange-rate difference changes the rupiah value by about IDR 14.8 million even when Bitcoin's dollar price is unchanged.

The calculation is illustrative. Actual transaction prices can differ because of spreads, liquidity, fees, data timing, and the exchange rate used by a platform.

Indonesian traders should separate gains caused by Bitcoin from changes caused by the rupiah. This distinction helps determine whether a position is benefiting from the underlying asset or mainly from local-currency depreciation.

What would turn consolidation into a rally?

The $81,000 area does not provide a strong directional confirmation. A more constructive structure would require spot demand, the ability to hold above the previous range, and leverage that does not become excessively crowded.

A rally would have firmer support if:

  • Bitcoin breaks above the upper range with increasing spot volume.

  • Open interest grows gradually instead of surging within a short period.

  • Funding rates remain controlled.

  • Treasury yields and the dollar do not rise sharply.

  • PCE data reduce concern about another rate increase.

That scenario could fail if inflation exceeds expectations, the dollar strengthens, or long positioning grows too quickly. A decline below $80,500 would also indicate that post-FOMC buyers could not maintain the price.

The Fed's decision avoided additional tightening in October, but it did not begin an easing phase. Bitcoin's limited response is consistent with that message. PCE inflation, US GDP, spot volume, and the leverage structure now matter more than a rate decision that largely matched expectations.
