Selangor rep urges govt to look into Rohingya settlement

PETALING JAYA: A Selangor assemblyman has called on the federal government to look into the Rohingya settlement issue, saying a more comprehensive solution is needed.

Johan Abd Aziz said enforcement alone was insufficient as the community would simply relocate and the root of the problem would remain unaddressed, Utusan Malaysia reported.

“How long will this issue continue?

“This is why I am proposing that a policy paper be prepared and brought to the Cabinet to discuss a long-term solution,” the Dusun Tua assemblyman was quoted as saying.

Johan’s comments come two days after menteri besar Amirudin Shari revealed that government agencies had been taking action over a residential building occupied by Rohingya at Kampung Baru Sungai Makau in Hulu Langat since 2016.

Amirudin said enforcement measures over the years included warning notices, compounds, investigations, integrated operations, and demolition exercises by multiple government agencies.

His comments followed viral videos of dilapidated flats allegedly occupied by Rohingya.

On Tuesday, the Kajang municipal council said that a four-storey block of flats in Sungai Makau, Hulu Langat, occupied by foreigners, had been illegally built.

Johan previously said the landowner had allowed the Rohingya community to build and reside at the flats.
