GOP lawmaker's encrypted messaging account hacked by Russia: report

A prominent Trump-skeptical House Republican was targeted by a Russian cyberattack, Politico reported on Wednesday.

Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) "told POLITICO Wednesday that Russian government-linked operatives compromised his account on the encrypted Signal messaging app about 'four to five months' ago," said the report. According to Bacon, both House technology experts and the FBI are investigating the incident.

Bacon added that he does not store classified information or anything else sensitive in the account in question, making it unlikely that the breach poses a significant threat to national security.

Though he has been a down-the-road conservative Republican for much of his time in Congress, Bacon has emerged as one of the more outspoken GOP lawmakers against President Donald Trump's abuses of the law and misadventures on the world stage.

Bacon, who is not seeking re-election this year, is also a fervent supporter of Ukraine in its struggle against Russian aggression, even as Trump has moved to dial back military assistance to the war-torn East European country and demanded the war be settled through "peace talks."
