Key Facts
The partnership will allow ChatGPT users to pay with PayPal, while giving PayPal merchants the ability to process transactions directly within the platform.
PayPal’s digital wallet will be integrated into ChatGPT’s Instant Checkout, supporting payments through bank accounts, balances and cards.
There is no specific launch date yet, though the rollout is expected soon.
PayPal shares surged more than 17% in premarket trading following the announcement, and are now hovering around an 8% gain.
PayPal said it also plans to use ACP, the system that links businesses, shoppers and AI agents to enable in-chat transactions, in 2026 to integrate product catalogs from small businesses and major brands across categories such as fashion, beauty, home improvement and electronics into ChatGPT commerce.
Beyond commerce, PayPal said it is also expanding access to ChatGPT Enterprise—a version of ChatGPT specifically designed for business use that creates content, analyzes data and writes code—for its 24,000+ employees.
Crucial Quote
“Hundreds of millions of people turn to ChatGPT each week for help with everyday tasks, including finding products they love, and over 400 million use PayPal to shop,” said PayPal CEO Alex Chriss said in a statement.
Key Background
PayPal’s partnerships marks one of the most significant steps so far in OpenAI’s push to make ChatGPT a hub for e-commerce, giving its roughly 700 million weekly users the ability to shop with AI acting as a personal assistant. Open AI’s recent deals with Walmart, Etsy and Shopify have already introduced in-chat purchasing, signaling a broader shift toward agent-driven retail. The market reacted strongly—Walmart shares rose nearly 5% following the announcement, while Etsy and Shopify climbed 16.8% and 6.2%, respectively. As OpenAI builds and expands this ecosystem, PayPal is taking note and positioning itself as a key player in the payment infrastructure for AI-driven shopping, building on recent collaborations with Google and Perplexity, CNBC reports.
Tangent
Roughly 38% of U.S. consumers have already used generative AI for online shopping and 52% plan to do so this year, according to an Adobe survey.
