Elon Musk has hinted at what could be one of his most ambitious ideas yet. Speaking during Tesla’s Q3 2025 earnings call on October 22, Musk proposed turning the company’s global fleet of electric vehicles into a massive distributed AI supercomputer.
He explained that as Tesla’s cars grow more intelligent with AI4 and AI5 chips, they may soon have “almost too much intelligence for a car.”
The logic is deceptively simple. Every Tesla already contains a powerful onboard AI computer, hardware capable of running complex inference tasks. When those cars are parked (which is roughly 95% of the time), that computing power just sits idle. Musk’s vision is to connect them into a single, unified AI network, a planetary-scale inference engine that rivals, and possibly surpasses, the power of today’s largest data centers.
Musk outlined a scenario in which tens of millions, or even 100 million, Teslas could contribute roughly one kilowatt of inference power each. Collectively, that’s 100 gigawatts of distributed AI compute,spread across continents, powered by existing batteries, and naturally cooled by the environment.
To put that in perspective, that’s more inference capacity than most cloud computing giants could hope to match without spending tens of billions of dollars on infrastructure.
While Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are pouring billions into massive server farms that guzzle energy and strain local power grids, Musk’s idea flips the model entirely. Instead of concentrating AI power in giant industrial complexes, Tesla’s fleet would distribute it globally.
Each vehicle becomes a node in a self-sustaining, self-cooling data network. There’s no need for new land purchases, no huge cooling towers, and no single point of failure. It’s a digital ecosystem built on hardware that already exists, maintained by owners, and constantly updated via Tesla’s over-the-air software system.
This approach could grant Tesla unprecedented flexibility. By tapping into idle cars during off-peak hours, the company could run large-scale AI models, support external clients, or even feed computational resources to its own projects, like training self-driving algorithms or supporting xAI, Musk’s AI research venture.
The economic implications are as intriguing as the technology. If Tesla compensates car owners for renting out their vehicle’s idle compute power, the system could become a new form of passive income. Imagine your parked Tesla earning money while you sleep, effectively turning your driveway into a piece of the world’s largest AI engine.
Such a setup also promotes energy efficiency. By using vehicles’ existing power infrastructure and syncing operations during low-demand grid hours, Tesla could achieve a near-zero-cost computing ecosystem. This kind of innovation represents the convergence of mobility, energy, and artificial intelligence, a trifecta that Musk has been pursuing for over a decade.
