SINGAPORE, June 27 — A new mobile speed camera installed along the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) will begin detecting speeding offences from July 1, the police said on June 26.

The device, located at the 9km mark of the BKE towards Woodlands after the Turf Club Avenue exit, has been undergoing testing and calibration since June 16. The stretch is known to be accident‑prone, and motorists are advised to keep within the expressway’s 90kmh speed limit.

The Traffic Police said the installation is part of broader efforts to improve safety on the BKE. It follows the Land Transport Authority’s introduction of speed‑regulating strips near Exit 10B in November 2025, designed to prompt drivers to slow down as they approach the area.

Speeding remains a growing concern. Offences rose from 201,358 cases in 2024 to 253,550 in 2025, averaging nearly 700 violations a day. The increase may be linked to stepped‑up enforcement and the activation of speed‑detection functions in more red‑light cameras.

Singapore also tightened its demerit point system in early 2026, raising the minimum penalty for speeding from four to six points.

Separately, authorities have moved to curb violations by foreign‑registered vehicles. From Nov 2, drivers with outstanding traffic, parking or emissions fines will not be allowed to apply for or renew their Vehicle Entry Permit until all fines are settled.
