When Kelli Hull moved back to Texas after almost two decades in Washington, D.C., she ran into a problem familiar to a lot of Hill Country women: there was nowhere nearby to buy contemporary designer clothing. A blazer, a pair of shoes, a dress for an evening event – any of it meant a 45-minute drive into San Antonio to La Cantera or a specialty boutique like Julian Gold. So Hull did something about it. She opened Monkee’s of Fair Oaks Ranch, a locally owned, veteran-owned women’s boutique now serving the Fair Oaks Ranch and Boerne communities from the Lemon Creek Ranch development.

“It was really apparent to me that we had a fairly substantive gap in the market,” Hull said. “If you wanted to wear contemporary designers, there was nowhere to get it in this area. I kept hearing from other women that they had the same frustrations. So I decided to finally pull the trigger on what had been a bucket-list career path for me.”

Coming home to Texas

A native Texan who grew up all over the state and graduated from Texas A&M University, Hull left for Washington, D.C. after college and spent nearly 20 years in government contracting, advising private companies on doing business with the special operations and intelligence communities. She met her husband, Chris, an Army Reserve officer, in D.C. About a year ago the family moved home to Texas, built a house, and sent a child off to college – and Hull eventually traded the weekly commute back to D.C. for a life fully rooted in the Hill Country.

What is Monkee’s?

Monkee’s is a North Carolina-based franchise of locally owned women’s boutiques known for carrying big contemporary designer names in small, personal, neighborhood storefronts. Hull discovered her first Monkee’s eight years ago in Raleigh, North Carolina, and was struck by how a boutique of that size could carry such well-known brands.

The answer, she learned, is collective buying power. “Because we’re a franchise, the buying power the franchisees have together is significant,” Hull said. “Someone like me – my store wasn’t even open yet – could walk into a major showroom in New York and buy for the season ahead. Without that, none of this would be possible.”

Monkee’s of Fair Oaks Ranch is store #8 in Texas and roughly #67 across the country – placing Hull early in a growing national brand. At a little over 1,200 square feet, the boutique reflects the franchise’s signature small footprint and curated, personal approach, carrying contemporary designers across a wide range of price points so customers can shop from day to night without leaving the Hill Country.

A different kind of shopping experience

For Hull, the store is about more than clothes. Having navigated her own seasons of not knowing what to wear – including after having children – she wants every customer to leave feeling confident.

“A lot of women just need someone to say, ‘You’re beautiful, that looks good on you – but I think we can do even better,'” Hull said. “When you look good, you feel good, and that projects out. It’s my solemn vow that I’ll never let anyone leave Monkee’s of Fair Oaks Ranch in something that doesn’t look phenomenal on them.”

As a veteran-owned and operated business in the San Antonio area – Military City USA – Monkee’s of Fair Oaks Ranch also plans to support the military community, with more details to come.
