Jordan starts work on stadium in new green city

Jordan has started working on its largest sport stadium, one of the main parts of a planned green city to be built over a period of 25 years.

In 2025, the cabinet approved the Amra City project in Central Jordan, 40 km from the capital Amman. Phase one of the project is scheduled to be completed in 2029.

The cabinet said on its official website last year that the new city is not designed to be a new administrative or political capital but it is intended to ease demographic pressures on central cities, including Amman and Zarqa.

In a statement on Sunday, the Jordan Company for the Development of Cities and Facilities (JCDCF) announced the commencement of excavation work for the King Hussein international stadium project.

The stadium, with a seating capacity of 46,000, will span 1 sq km and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2029.

“The stadium’s design is inspired by Jordan’s cultural and architectural heritage, incorporating a modern and contemporary style,” a statement annoucning the construction said. Amra spans more than 500 sq km, including around 40 sq km for phase one, according to JCDCF, which will oversee the city project.

Besides the stadium and housing, the new city is intendede to include an international exhibition and conference centre, entertainment facilities, an ecological park, commercial and services zones and cultural facilities.
