MEXC is our pick in this comparison for traders outside the United States, the United Kingdom, the EEA and Canada who want 0% maker spot fees, faster new listings and USDT-funded real US stocks.
Kraken is the better choice inside those four markets, and for anyone who values licences over cost.

Key Takeaways
  • MEXC is our top pick in this comparison for non-US traders: 0% spot maker and 0.05% taker against Kraken Pro's 0.40% and 0.80% at Tier 1, as of 3 September 2026.
  • Kraken wins on licences with FCA registration, two MiCA authorisations, Canadian registration and US state licences, while MEXC holds none of these and sits on the FCA Warning List.
  • Kraken's 11,000 plus commission-free stocks are for US clients only, while MEXC RealStocks gives eligible non-US users 7,000 plus real US stocks and ETFs paid for in USDT.
  • MEXC lists more and faster: 1,633 coins against 717 on CoinGecko, and 879 new perpetuals between January 2025 and April 2026.
  • A $10,000 a month spot buyer pays about $1,200 a year on Kraken's instant buy, $960 on Kraken Pro Tier 1, and $60 or less on MEXC.
  • If you live in the US, UK, EEA or Canada, MEXC is not an option and Kraken is the licensed choice of the two.

MEXC vs Kraken Verdict: Three Numbers Decide It for Non-US Traders

Kraken published its own MEXC comparison in January 2026, and its framing is fair: Kraken is the licensed, curated venue and MEXC is the broad, low-fee one.
What that page leaves out is the arithmetic, so here it is, verified against both platforms' official schedules on 3 September 2026.
Number one is the fee gap.
Kraken's cheapest published spot rate for a small account is 0.80% on market orders through Kraken Pro, and its simplest interface charges 1% plus a spread.
MEXC charges 0.0000% maker and 0.0500% taker on spot, and the 20% MX deduction takes the taker rate to 0.0400% on eligible pairs (mexc.com/fee, retrieved 2 September 2026).
Standard USDT-M futures cost 0.010% maker and 0.040% taker, and BTCUSDT carries a pair-specific Special Rate of 0.000% maker and 0.020% taker.
Number two is listing pace.
CoinGecko's 2026 perpetuals report counted 879 new perpetual contracts on MEXC between January 2025 and April 2026, roughly 55 a month and the most of any major centralised exchange in that window.
MEXC's own listing analysis for March 2026 recorded 135 new spot listings, 65% of them platform-first.
Number three is who can buy US stocks.
The stock products Kraken advertises most loudly are the ones a non-US reader cannot buy: its commission-free stocks are for US clients only, and its xStocks tokens are closed to the US, the UK, Canada and Australia.
MEXC RealStocks, launched on 1 June 2026, goes the other way: eligible users outside MEXC's prohibited jurisdictions buy real shares in US-listed companies through a FINRA-registered broker partner, Atomic Vaults Securities, while paying in USDT.
MEXC's Learn page of 10 August 2026 lists 7,000 plus US stocks and ETFs, four trading sessions that cover almost the full 24 hours on weekdays, and cash dividends where applicable.
Here is what the fee gap means in cash.
A trader who buys $10,000 of crypto a month with market orders pays about $1,200 a year on Kraken's instant buy before spread, $960 on Kraken Pro at Tier 1, and $456 on Kraken Pro once $10,000 of 30-day volume or $20,000 of assets lifts the account to Tier 3.
The same trader pays $60 a year at MEXC's taker rate, $48 with the MX deduction, and nothing at all as a maker.
On $200,000 of monthly futures notional, Kraken Futures charges $1,200 a year at its 0.05% Tier 1 taker rate, while MEXC charges $960 at the standard 0.040% and $480 on BTCUSDT at the Special Rate.
Those savings only matter if you can hold the account, so the caveat comes before the button: MEXC is not licensed in the US, UK, EEA or Canada, and its User Agreement prohibits residents of all four.
If that is you, the rest of this article is information rather than a recommendation, and the Kraken column is your answer.

The MEXC View

We publish MEXC Learn, so read this section as the interested party speaking in the first person.
We scored this comparison on the same six dimensions we use across our exchange reviews: fees, listings, derivatives, security, fiat access and regulation, plus US stock access because it is now the reason most readers compare these two names.
Kraken beats us on three of those seven, and we would rather say so here than let you find out from its own comparison page.
It holds licences in the four markets where we hold none: an FCA registration in the UK, two MiCA authorisations from the Central Bank of Ireland, Restricted Dealer registration in Canada and US state licences with a Wyoming bank charter.
It has run since 2011 with Proof of Reserves since 2014 and no reported breach of client funds, while our reserve reporting is monthly and our track record is shorter.
It moves fiat in ten currencies with bank rails and an OTC desk, while we are a USDT-first exchange that relies on card and transfer partners and P2P.
We also accept the most common complaint against us: risk-control reviews that delay withdrawals, which Kraken's page and third-party audits both raise, and which is why the switching steps below tell you to test a withdrawal before you move size.
What would change our verdict is simple: if Kraken is licensed in your country and MEXC is not, choose Kraken, and no fee table should talk you out of that.
Everywhere else, the numbers above are the case for MEXC, and every one of them carries the date on which we checked it.

US stocks: Kraken's 11,000 tickers are for Americans, MEXC RealStocks is for everyone else

If you are a US client, Kraken gives you commission-free real stocks and nothing at MEXC is available to you; if you are outside the US, MEXC RealStocks is the only route on either platform to real share ownership paid for in USDT.
Kraken's fee schedule states that its commission-free trading of 11,000 plus stocks and ETFs is currently available in the US only, with regulatory fees passed through to the investor.
For everyone else Kraken offers xStocks, tokenized shares issued by Backed Assets (JE) Limited and distributed by Kraken's Bermuda-licensed entity.
Kraken's own availability page, updated 18 June 2026, says xStocks are not available in the United States, Australia, Canada, the UK or prohibited regions, and that EEA clients must pass a questionnaire and can then trade xStocks with fiat only through the Convert feature.
Buying xStocks with USD or USDG carries no trading fee on the Kraken app, a spread may be included in the price, and paying with other assets costs the standard 1%.
MEXC RealStocks is a different structure.
You hold beneficial ownership of real shares held for you by the broker partner, you receive cash dividends where applicable, and your USDT is converted into US dollar buying power without an exchange-rate loss, according to MEXC's Learn explainer of 10 August 2026.
Coverage is 7,000 plus US stocks and ETFs, and MEXC reported more than 120,000 RealStocks accounts opened in the first month after launch.
The four sessions run from 00:00 to 07:50, 08:00 to 13:30, 13:30 to 20:00 and 20:00 to 00:00 UTC on trading days, which is close to round the clock on weekdays but not the 24/7 access that tokenized products offer.
MEXC waived RealStocks platform trading fees during the launch period, and its June 2026 announcement notes that SEC and FINRA regulatory charges still apply.
RealStocks does not support leverage or short selling.
For those two features MEXC runs 100 plus Ondo tokenized stock pairs that trade round the clock, and USDT-margined stock futures that go long or short.

Listings and speed: MEXC lists more and faster, Kraken vets harder

MEXC carries more than twice Kraken's tracked coin count and lists new tokens far sooner, while Kraken's smaller list is a deliberate filter that conservative holders may prefer.
MEXC's fee page listed more than 2,080 spot pairs and more than 1,040 USDT-M perpetual pairs when counted on 2 September 2026, so two independent counts land close together.
Speed is where the gap is widest.
CoinGecko's 2026 perpetuals report found MEXC added 879 perpetual contracts between January 2025 and April 2026, while six of the eleven largest exchanges added fewer than 20 a month.
When the TRUMP token launched in January 2025, MEXC opened spot trading two hours and twenty minutes after on-chain liquidity appeared, according to TokenInsight's March 2025 review of that listing.
Kraken has not stopped listing, but its 2026 pipeline is pointed elsewhere.
CoinGecko's Kraken exchange report shows 66 of its 147 new listings between January and April 2026 were RWA or xStocks products rather than new crypto tokens.
That is the trade-off in one line: MEXC gives you the token on day one, Kraken gives you the token after review, if at all.
Day-one listings include tokens that later fail, and MEXC's risk labels and small-cap warnings exist for that reason, as our guide to new-listing exchanges explains in detail.

MEXC fees vs Kraken fees: three Kraken price layers against one MEXC schedule

MEXC is cheaper at every tier we checked, and Kraken's real cost depends entirely on which of its three interfaces you use.
Kraken's fee schedule, retrieved 3 September 2026, lists three price layers.
The Kraken app charges 1% on instant and recurring trades and 1.5% on custom orders, with a spread included in the quoted price and card fees on top.
Kraken+ costs $4.99 a month and waives those app trading fees on up to $10,000 of monthly volume, but spreads still apply and Kraken Pro trades are excluded.
Kraken Pro uses cross-platform fee tiers introduced on 9 July 2026, where your tier is the better of your 30-day spot volume or your assets on platform.
Tier 1 is 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker, Tier 3 at $10,000 of volume or $20,000 of assets is 0.22% and 0.38%, Tier 7 at $250,000 of volume or $400,000 of assets is 0.10% and 0.22%, and the maker rate only reaches 0% at $10 million of volume.
A separate rebate schedule for selected lower-liquidity pairs starts at 0.38% maker and 0.80% taker.
MEXC's schedule is flat and public: 0.0000% maker and 0.0500% taker on spot, and the 20% MX deduction takes the taker rate to 0.0400% on eligible pairs, with some pairs excluded.
Standard USDT-M futures cost 0.010% maker and 0.040% taker.
Three boundaries stop that being a free lunch.
The Special Rate is pair-specific: BTCUSDT is 0.000% maker and 0.020% taker and ETHUSDT is 0.000% maker and 0.010% taker, but the tag does not apply to every contract.
API futures orders have carried their own schedule of 0.060% maker and 0.080% taker since 1 June 2026, and that schedule overrides web and app rates, promotions and the MX deduction.
Zero-fee promotions on specific pairs, such as XRP/USDT on spot, are campaign pricing and can end.
Kraken Futures charges 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker at Tier 1, so the futures gap is narrower than the spot gap: 0.040% against 0.050% for a taker on a standard MEXC pair, and 0.020% against 0.050% on BTCUSDT.
Our fee comparison across major exchanges shows how both platforms sit against the rest of the market.

MEXC vs Kraken Futures: 1,040 Perpetuals vs 322, and the 50x Cap

MEXC has more than three times Kraken's perpetual pairs and lower base fees, while Kraken offers a smaller, licensed derivatives book that many jurisdictions cannot use anyway.
MEXC's fee page carried more than 1,040 USDT-M perpetual pairs on 2 September 2026, with leverage limits published contract by contract.
CoinGecko lists 322 trading pairs on Kraken Futures, and Kraken's own comparison page caps futures leverage at 50x and margin at 5x.
Kraken's fee schedule states that for Canada, US and New Zealand customers futures are not available or do not count toward its tiers, and Kraken serves US clients through a separately regulated derivatives arm instead.
Kraken's in-app Perps product, offered in certain regions, charges 0.25% to open and 0.25% to close on the notional value, which is more than six times the standard MEXC taker cost for a round trip on a standard pair, 0.50% against 0.08%.
MEXC is our pick for a trader who wants a wide perpetual list, maker-friendly pricing and a Special Rate on BTCUSDT.
Kraken is the better fit if you want your derivatives venue to sit under MiFID or CFTC supervision and you trade the majors.
Leverage magnifies losses as fast as gains, and MEXC's maximum leverage on selected contracts is far above Kraken's 50x, which is a risk to manage rather than a feature to chase.

Is Kraken Safer Than MEXC? Proof of Reserves Since 2014 vs Monthly Audits

Kraken has one of the longest custody records among major exchanges, no reported loss of client funds by its own account, and the certifications to show for it, while MEXC publishes monthly Proof of Reserves and has no recorded custody-level breach of its own.
Kraken introduced Proof of Reserves in 2014, holds ISO/IEC 27001 and SOC 2 Type II certifications, and states on its comparison page that it has never suffered a breach resulting in loss of client funds.
MEXC publishes monthly Proof of Reserves with Hacken-named audits and has no custody-level hack on record, and its account-level protections cover two-factor authentication, withdrawal whitelists, anti-phishing codes and a fund password.
The complaint Kraken's page raises, and that third-party reviews such as Datawallet's July 2026 audit repeat, is withdrawal delays and account freezes triggered by MEXC's risk-control reviews.
That complaint is real, and the practical response is to test any new exchange with a small withdrawal before moving a balance, which is what we recommend in the switching steps below.
Kraken's page also cites a July 2025 case in which one trader publicised a frozen account holding about $3 million.
Our guide to MEXC's asset protection covers the reserve reports and account controls in more depth.

MEXC vs Kraken Regulation: Four Licences on One Side, Warning Lists on the Other

Kraken is licensed or registered in the US, UK, EEA and Canada; MEXC is not licensed in any of them, is named on regulator warning lists in the UK, Hong Kong, the Netherlands and Japan, and bars residents of all four markets in its own terms.
Kraken's licensing page, retrieved 3 September 2026, lists an FCA registration as a cryptoasset firm in the UK, two MiCA crypto-asset service provider authorisations from the Central Bank of Ireland dated 25 June 2025 and passported across the EEA, Restricted Dealer registration with Canadian securities regulators, US state licences with a Wyoming bank charter, and a MiFID investment firm licence via CySEC for derivatives.
MEXC's position is the opposite, and we state it in full.
The UK Financial Conduct Authority added MEXC Global Ltd to its Warning List on 22 March 2024 as an unauthorised firm.
The Dutch regulator AFM issued a formal decision against MEXC on 16 September 2025, and MEXC appears on ESMA's list of entities that are not authorised under MiCA.
MEXC's User Agreement, last updated 29 May 2025, names the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Mainland China, Kazakhstan, sanctioned states and the Russian-controlled regions of Ukraine as prohibited jurisdictions.
None of that changes the fee or listing figures above, but it decides who can act on them.

Fiat and Ecosystem: Kraken's 10 Currencies vs MEXC's USDT-First Stack

Kraken moves fiat in and out in 10 currencies with bank-grade rails, while MEXC is a USDT-first exchange that relies on card and transfer partners and P2P.
Kraken supports direct deposits and withdrawals in USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, CHF, JPY, ARS, MXN and BRL, runs an OTC desk, offers staking on more than 21 assets, and gives clients live chat around the clock with phone support in some cases.
MEXC's fiat access runs through global bank transfer, card purchases and its P2P market, and most of its markets quote in USDT.
MEXC's ecosystem is built around trading rather than banking: spot and futures copy trading, grid and DCA bots, Launchpad, Launchpool and Kickstarter token events, and on-chain trading through DEX+.
If your first step is converting a salary in a bank account into crypto, Kraken is easier.
If your capital already sits in stablecoins, MEXC's rails are enough and its fee schedule does the rest.

Where Kraken is still the better choice

Four advantages survive every fee table in this article.
Licences: FCA registration, two MiCA authorisations, Canadian registration and US state licences give residents of those markets local protections that MEXC cannot offer them.
Custody record: fourteen years of operation, Proof of Reserves since 2014 and no reported breach of client funds.
Fiat: ten direct currencies, bank rails and an OTC desk make Kraken the easier place to move large sums between a bank account and crypto.
US stocks for US clients: commission-free trading of 11,000 plus real stocks and ETFs inside the same app as their crypto.
Kraken's curated listing policy is a fifth advantage for holders who would rather have 700 vetted assets than 1,600 fast ones.

Switching from Kraken to MEXC in three steps

Step 1: Open and verify the MEXC account.
Register at MEXC, complete identity verification and enable two-factor authentication before you deposit anything.
Our MEXC KYC guide lists what each verification tier unlocks.
Step 2: Move a test amount first.
Withdraw a small amount of USDT or USDC from Kraken to your MEXC deposit address on a network both platforms support, and confirm the address, network and any memo or tag character by character.
Wait for it to credit, then withdraw a small amount back out of MEXC to confirm the exit works as well as the entry.
Step 3: Move the balance and set your fee options.
Send the rest once the test clears, switch on the MX deduction if you hold MX, and remember that API futures orders use their own fee schedule.
Our MEXC withdrawal guide covers the exit side in detail.

MEXC vs Kraken FAQ

Is MEXC cheaper than Kraken?
Yes on published rates: MEXC spot is 0% maker and 0.05% taker, while Kraken Pro Tier 1 is 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker and the Kraken app charges 1% plus spread, as of 3 September 2026.
See the current schedule at mexc.com/fee.

Is Kraken safer than MEXC?
Kraken has the longer record, licences in the US, UK, EEA and Canada, Proof of Reserves since 2014 and ISO and SOC 2 certifications, while MEXC publishes monthly Proof of Reserves but holds none of those licences.
Choose Kraken if regulatory protection is your priority.

Can I trade US stocks on MEXC like on Kraken?
Kraken's commission-free stocks are for US clients only, while MEXC RealStocks lets eligible non-US users buy real US shares with USDT through a FINRA-registered broker partner, covering 7,000 plus stocks and ETFs.
Start with our RealStocks product guide.

Which lists more coins, MEXC or Kraken?
MEXC, by a wide margin: CoinGecko tracks 1,633 coins and 2,021 spot pairs on MEXC against 717 coins and 1,412 pairs on Kraken, as of September 2026.
Kraken's smaller list reflects its vetting policy rather than a lack of demand.

Is MEXC on the FCA warning list?
Yes, the FCA added MEXC Global Ltd to its Warning List on 22 March 2024, and the UK is a prohibited jurisdiction in MEXC's User Agreement.
UK readers should use an FCA-registered platform such as Kraken.

Can I use MEXC in the US or Canada instead of Kraken?
No, both countries are prohibited jurisdictions under MEXC's User Agreement of 29 May 2025, while Kraken serves both.
Residents of the EEA are in the same position after the 1 July 2026 MiCA deadline.

How do I move funds from Kraken to MEXC?
Withdraw USDT or USDC from Kraken to your MEXC deposit address on a network both platforms support, send a small test amount first, then move the rest.
You can open a MEXC account and generate the deposit address in a few minutes.

Risk and compliance notice

MEXC is not licensed in the United States, the United Kingdom, the EEA or Canada, and its User Agreement prohibits residents of those markets and of the other jurisdictions listed above.
Nothing in this article is an invitation to residents of prohibited jurisdictions to open an account.
Futures, margin and leveraged products can lose more than your initial margin, and high leverage on small-cap contracts increases that risk sharply.
RealStocks, tokenized stocks and stock futures carry market risk, and tokenized stocks and stock futures do not confer shareholder rights.
Fees, listings and regulatory statuses change, and every figure above carries the date on which we verified it.
