For traders outside the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and the EEA, MEXC is our pick in this MEXC vs Coinbase comparison on one published number: 0.0000% maker and 0.0500% taker on major spot pairs, against a Coinbase simple-screen stack that can reach $28.75 on a $1,000 limit buy before the spread.
If you live in the United States or the United Kingdom, the answer is Coinbase, because MEXC does not serve either country, which is where a coinbase vs mexc search should end for readers there.

Key Takeaways
  • MEXC is our pick for traders outside the US, UK, Canada and EEA on one published number: 0.0000% maker and 0.0500% taker on major spot pairs, verified on its fee page on September 2, 2026.
  • Coinbase is the answer for US and UK readers, and for anyone in the EEA or Canada, where it holds local authorisations and MEXC holds none.
  • A $1,000 simple limit buy on Coinbase can cost up to $28.75 in published fees plus an unpublished spread, against $0.50 as a taker on MEXC and nothing as a maker.
  • Coinbase Exchange lists 403 coins on CoinGecko's count against 1,633 on MEXC, and MEXC listed 879 new perpetual contracts between January 2025 and April 2026.
  • Coinbase leads on licensing, public-company disclosure and CoinGecko's Trust Score of 10 out of 10 against MEXC's 9.
  • Coinbase's May 2025 data breach exposed customer data but not passwords, keys or funds, while MEXC's most common public complaint is risk-control withdrawal delays, so test a small withdrawal first.

MEXC vs Coinbase Verdict: MEXC Wins on Price Outside the US and UK, Coinbase Wins Inside Them

Coinbase and MEXC sit at opposite ends of the centralised exchange spectrum, one a US-listed company built on licensing and fiat rails, the other a global venue built on listing breadth and price.
That contrast is why the comparison is worth making, and why the answer depends on where you live before it depends on anything else.

The pain: the number on the confirmation screen

Most people who compare these two are not unhappy with Coinbase as a product.
They are reacting to a fee breakdown they saw right before tapping confirm.
On Coinbase's simple buy and sell screen, the quoted price includes a spread that Coinbase does not publish as a fixed rate and shows only on the order preview.
A simple limit order adds a separate execution fee of 1% of the trade, and Coinbase may also charge a Coinbase fee of up to 1.875% depending on payment method.
Coinbase One, the subscription that waives the standard trading fee up to a monthly cap, explicitly does not waive the 1% limit-order fee, and the spread still applies.
The third path, Coinbase Advanced, removes the spread because you trade the order book directly, but its full tier table is shown only after you sign in.

The mechanism: one public schedule, per pair, no spread

MEXC prices the same trade one way.
Every listed pair has its own maker and taker row on the official fee page, readable without an account, and there is no spread because every order goes through the order book.
On September 2, 2026, that page showed spot at 0.0000% maker and 0.0000% to 0.0500% taker, with major pairs at the standard 0.0500% taker and XRP/USDT carrying a zero-fee tag on both sides.
Enabling the MX deduction takes 20% off spot fees, so the taker rate becomes 0.0400%, and it requires no lock-up.
Futures run on a range, 0.000% to 0.040% maker and 0.000% to 0.100% taker, with standard contracts at 0.010% and 0.040% and BTCUSDT carrying a Special Rate of 0.000% maker and 0.020% taker.

The arithmetic: one trade, then a habit

Take a $1,000 spot buy.
As a simple limit order on Coinbase, the published fees alone can reach $10.00 plus $18.75, which is $28.75, before the spread.
As a taker on MEXC the same buy costs $0.50, or $0.40 with the MX deduction, and as a maker it costs nothing.
Now scale the trade to a habit: $500 twice a month for a year, or $12,000.
On Coinbase's simple screen with limit orders that is $120 in execution fees plus up to $225 in Coinbase fees, or up to $345 a year, and the spread is still on top.
On MEXC the same twelve months of taker orders cost $6.00, or $4.80 with MX, and nothing at all as maker orders.
The gap is not that Coinbase is expensive in some vague sense.
It is that three separate Coinbase charges stack on the simple screen, one of them has no published figure, and MEXC has one charge that you can read before you open an account.

Where MEXC is not the answer

MEXC's User Agreement names the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada among its prohibited jurisdictions, and our restricted countries guide lists the rest.
MEXC holds no MiCA authorisation and stopped serving the EEA when the transition period ended on July 1, 2026.
MEXC holds none of the licences named in this article, and readers for whom that decides the question should choose Coinbase.
Readers outside those regions who are leaving Coinbase over the number on the confirmation screen can check the live rate on their own pairs before moving any size.

The MEXC View

We should say plainly who wrote this.
MEXC publishes this article and MEXC is one of the two platforms in it, so you are reading a comparison produced by a participant.
That is a reason to check our numbers, and every one carries a source and a date so that you can.
Here is what we think the evidence supports, including the parts that favour Coinbase.
We do not win on licensing, and it is not close.
Coinbase is a US public company that files audited accounts with the SEC, holds state licences across the United States, registered as a Restricted Dealer in Canada in April 2024, and received a MiCA authorisation from Luxembourg's CSSF in June 2025.
We are none of those things.
We do not win on fiat rails either: Coinbase's ACH, wire, card and PayPal options in supported regions are better than our P2P and third-party routes.
CoinGecko scores Coinbase Exchange 10 out of 10 and MEXC 9 out of 10, and we show that score rather than leaving it out.
We also carry a complaint that Coinbase does not: risk-control reviews that delay withdrawals, which third-party reviews in 2026 name as the most common issue with our platform.
The practical answer is the one we give in every comparison: test a small withdrawal before you move size.
What we claim is narrow.
On published spot pricing we charge nothing as maker and 0.0500% as taker, and on CoinGecko's count we list roughly four times as many coins.
Those two facts are the only grounds on which we call ourselves the pick for traders outside restricted regions, and if anything else on this page matters more to you, the honest answer is Coinbase.

MEXC vs Coinbase at a Glance: Six Columns

Where You Can Actually Use Each One

Availability is the constraint that overrides every number above, so it comes before the fee detail.
United States and United Kingdom.
Coinbase serves both, and MEXC serves neither, so nothing in this article is a switching option for you.
If your complaint is the fee stack, the free fix is to switch to Coinbase Advanced, which removes the spread without moving your assets anywhere.
EU and EEA.
Coinbase received its MiCA authorisation from Luxembourg's CSSF on June 20, 2025, as recorded by Luxembourg for Finance.
MEXC appears on ESMA's register of entities identified as not compliant with EU rules following a decision by the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets dated September 16, 2025, and it stopped serving EEA clients from July 1, 2026.
Canada.
Coinbase became a CSA Restricted Dealer on April 4, 2024, per Bloomberg Law, while MEXC's User Agreement prohibits Canada.
Japan.
Coinbase halted its Japan operations in January 2023, as CoinDesk reported.
MEXC's website is reachable from Japan, its app is not in the Japanese app stores, and MEXC appears on the Japan Financial Services Agency's list of unregistered operators, so Japanese readers should treat this article as information rather than a recommendation.
Everywhere else.
Check MEXC's User Agreement and Coinbase's regional terms before funding an account, because both lists change.

MEXC vs Coinbase Fees: Three Coinbase Price Paths Against One MEXC Schedule

Coinbase runs three pricing models under one brand, and the gap between them is larger than the gap between most exchanges.
The simple screen is the one most people use, and it is the one where fees are hardest to predict in advance.
Coinbase's pricing disclosure says the Coinbase fee depends on payment method, order size, market conditions, jurisdiction and asset, and that fees may vary for similar transactions.
Coinbase One caps the standard fee at a subscription price across its membership tiers, but Coinbase states in the same disclosure that the zero-fee benefit does not apply to the 1% limit-order execution fee.
Coinbase Advanced is the honest like-for-like comparison with MEXC, because both are order books with maker and taker rates and no spread.
The difference is visibility: Coinbase's help centre says the complete Advanced fee structure is shown after you sign in, while MEXC's schedule is a public page with 209 pages of spot pairs.
Third-party reviews in 2026 report Coinbase Advanced entry-tier rates of up to 0.60% taker, but we have not confirmed that figure on an open Coinbase page and do not treat it as verified.
One more line item matters if you hold stablecoins: Coinbase charges a 0.01% processing fee on USDT withdrawals, capped at 20 USDT, on top of the network fee.
MEXC publishes per-route withdrawal fees on the same fee page, and our exchange fee comparison works through the full maths across more venues.

Coins and Listings: 403 Against 1,633

On CoinGecko's count, retrieved September 2 to 3, 2026, Coinbase Exchange lists 403 coins across 519 spot pairs and MEXC lists 1,633 coins across 2,021 pairs.
One caution belongs next to that chart.
The 403 figure counts assets on Coinbase Exchange's own order books, and the Coinbase app can also route trades to decentralised exchanges, so the number of things you can buy through the app is larger than the number listed on its venue.
Pace is the other half of breadth.
CoinGecko's 2026 perpetuals report counted 879 new perpetual contracts on MEXC between January 2025 and April 2026, the most of any major centralised exchange, and Coinbase does not appear in that count.
Coinbase reviews assets before listing them and publishes a listing roadmap, which is a real strength for a regulated venue and a real limitation if the token you want is not there yet.
MEXC's listing calendar carries timestamps you can audit yourself.

Derivatives and Beyond Crypto

Both platforms now sell more than spot crypto, and the product maps diverge sharply.
Coinbase offers perpetual futures to eligible non-US users through Coinbase Advanced, with a maximum of 10x leverage per its developer documentation and a promotional rate of 0% maker and 0.03% taker shown on its derivatives page on September 3, 2026.
The same documentation says international derivatives move to a Deribit-powered gateway on September 9, 2026, so treat Coinbase's non-US futures terms as in transition.
In the United States, Coinbase rolled out a simplified in-app futures experience alongside stock trading and Kalshi prediction markets on December 17, 2025, as CNBC reported.
MEXC's derivatives book runs over 1,040 USDT-M pairs with leverage up to 500x on selected contracts, and BTCUSDT trades at 0.000% maker and 0.020% taker.
Two boundaries belong here.
The top of MEXC's futures range is 0.040% maker and 0.100% taker, so check the specific contract before you size a strategy around the headline rate.
API futures orders bill on a separate schedule of 0.06% maker and 0.08% taker since June 1, 2026, which overrides web and app rates and the MX deduction.
Beyond crypto, MEXC's RealStocks launched on June 1, 2026 with more than 7,000 US stocks and ETFs held through a FINRA-registered broker, tokenized stocks trade around the clock, and US stock perpetuals reach 200x.
None of those products is available to US residents, who get commission-free stock trading inside the Coinbase app instead.
Both platforms run prediction markets: Coinbase through Kalshi for US users, and MEXC through native event contracts that sit in the same account as its futures, which we cover in our guide to trading Fed decisions.

Security and Regulation

This is Coinbase's home ground, and the record should be read in full rather than summarised into a score.
Coinbase publishes audited financial statements as a listed company, holds a New York BitLicense among its US authorisations, and states in its pricing disclosure that it has no payment-for-order-flow arrangements with market makers.
On May 15, 2025, Coinbase disclosed that criminals had bribed overseas support contractors to copy account data for less than 1% of monthly transacting users, according to CoinDesk.
No passwords, private keys or funds were exposed, Coinbase refused a $20 million ransom demand, pledged to reimburse customers tricked by the resulting social-engineering attacks, and estimated remediation costs of $180 million to $400 million in a regulatory filing, per CNBC.
That is an incident handled in the open, and CoinGecko records no incident against Coinbase Exchange in the twelve months to September 2026.
MEXC publishes a monthly proof of reserves audited by Hacken and has no custodial breach on public record, which our security overview documents in full.
MEXC's regulatory position is the trade-off, and it belongs here in plain words.
MEXC is not authorised under MiCA, appears on ESMA's register of non-compliant entities following the Dutch AFM decision of September 16, 2025, was added to the UK FCA Warning List on March 22, 2024, appears on the Japan FSA's unregistered operator list, and has been named on the Hong Kong SFC's list of suspicious virtual asset trading platforms.
MEXC does not serve US, UK or Canadian residents and stopped serving the EEA on July 1, 2026.

Where Coinbase Is Still the Better Choice

Four things, and they are not small.
Licensing: Coinbase serves the United States, the United Kingdom, the EEA and Canada under local authorisations, and for a reader in any of those places it settles the question before fees enter it.
Disclosure: audited public-company filings and a stated no-payment-for-order-flow policy are transparency signals no private offshore exchange matches.
Fiat rails: free ACH in the United States, wires, cards and PayPal in supported regions make Coinbase the smoother on-ramp if your money starts and ends in a bank account.
Breadth beyond crypto for US users: commission-free stocks, Kalshi prediction markets and the Base ecosystem sit in one Coinbase account.
A fifth, smaller point: Coinbase's curated listing policy means fewer thin, high-risk tokens, which is a feature for a long-term holder even if it is a limitation for an early-listing trader.
If any of those five is why you are on Coinbase, the honest advice is to stay.

Switching from Coinbase to MEXC in 3 Steps

This section applies only to readers outside the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and EEA.
Step 1. Generate the deposit address on MEXC.
Open your account, complete identity verification, and generate a deposit address for the exact asset and network you plan to use, copying any memo or tag the asset requires.
Step 2. Send a small test amount.
Withdraw the minimum from Coinbase first and wait for it to credit, because a wrong network or a missing memo is how transfers are lost permanently.
Coinbase charges a 0.01% processing fee on USDT withdrawals, capped at 20 USDT, plus the network fee, so a test on a cheap network costs very little.
Step 3. Move the balance and keep the records.
Send the rest once the test arrives, then save the transaction hashes and timestamps for your cost basis and tax records.
Our withdrawal walkthrough and the deposit and withdrawal support page cover the same checks in the other direction.

FAQ

Is MEXC better than Coinbase?
On published trading cost and listing breadth, yes, for traders outside the US, UK, Canada and EEA.
On licensing, disclosure and fiat rails, Coinbase is better, and in those four regions it is the only option of the two.

Can US residents use MEXC?
No, MEXC's User Agreement names the United States as a prohibited jurisdiction.
US readers should use Coinbase or another locally licensed platform.

Which is cheaper, MEXC or Coinbase, on a $1,000 trade?
MEXC, at $0.50 as a taker or nothing as a maker, against up to $28.75 plus an unpublished spread on a Coinbase simple limit order.
Coinbase Advanced narrows the gap but shows its rates only after sign-in.

Does MEXC have more coins than Coinbase?
Yes, 1,633 against 403 on CoinGecko's count as of September 2026.
The Coinbase app can also route to decentralised exchanges, which widens what it can reach beyond its own listings.

Is MEXC as safe as Coinbase?
Coinbase holds more licences, files audited accounts and scores 10 out of 10 on CoinGecko's Trust Score against MEXC's 9.
MEXC publishes monthly Hacken-audited proof of reserves and has no custodial breach on record, so test a small withdrawal before moving size.

Does Coinbase One make Coinbase cheaper than MEXC?
No, Coinbase states that the zero-fee benefit does not cover the 1% limit-order execution fee and that a spread still applies.
MEXC's 0.0000% maker rate needs no subscription.

How do I transfer crypto from Coinbase to MEXC?
Generate a deposit address on MEXC, send a small test amount on a matching network, then move the balance and keep the transaction hashes.
You can open an account and generate the address in minutes if your region is eligible.

Risk and Compliance Notice

Perpetual futures and leveraged products can lose more than your initial margin, and liquidation can happen faster than you can react.
Newly listed and small-capitalisation tokens carry thin liquidity, and on thin pairs the spread can cost more than every trading fee in this article combined.
Fee schedules, listing counts and regional availability change without notice, so confirm both against your own account before acting on anything here.
MEXC does not serve residents of the United States, the United Kingdom or Canada, and is not authorised as a crypto-asset service provider under MiCA in the European Economic Area.
Nothing in this article is financial advice.
Fee data verified September 2 to 3, 2026 against MEXC's official fee page and Coinbase's pricing and fees disclosures, Advanced fees page and derivatives page. Listing counts from CoinGecko exchange pages on the same dates. Our full scoring method is set out in our review methodology, and our Coinbase alternatives comparison covers seven more venues.
