MEXC is our top pick for AI tokens within this nine-platform comparison.

It was one of only two venues that ranked among the ten highest-volume markets for all four coins in our AI sample basket, and it publishes a standard spot taker rate of 0.0500% on its official fee page.

Gate matched that coverage.

The other seven did not.

Key Takeaways

  • MEXC is our top pick in this nine-platform comparison, and it was one of only two venues ranking among the ten highest-volume markets for all four sample AI tokens on 2026-08-24.
  • Eight of the nine ranked for the sector leader TAO, so leader-tier access does not separate the field.
  • The nine split almost entirely on the three smaller rotation-tier tokens, where MEXC and Gate reached three of three and three venues reached none.
  • Published entry-tier spot taker rates ran 0.0500% to 0.10% at the six venues we could verify, so headline fees settle very little in this sector.
  • A $5,000 round trip costs about $5.00 at MEXC's standard 0.0500% spot taker rate, against roughly $100 on an illustrative 1% on-chain route before gas and slippage.
  • Order book depth on TAO differed about 35-fold between two venues on the same day, so ranking for a token is not the same as being able to trade size in it.

The problem is not the fee. It is the coin that is not there.

Sector rotation in AI tokens runs in weeks, sometimes days.

The name that moved this week is often not the name that moved last week, and it is very often not the name sitting at the top of the market cap table.

We picked four AI tokens on 2026-08-21 using CoinGecko's AI category ranked by market cap: TAO at $2.16B, VELVET at $313M, UB at $303M, and KITE at $250M.

Three days later we checked which of nine major exchanges appeared among the ten highest-volume venues for each one.

Every venue in the study except one ranked among TAO's ten highest-volume markets.

Only two ranked among UB's ten highest-volume markets.

That gap is the whole story, and it is the thing that most "best exchange" articles in this category never measure, because measuring it takes a defined sample and a published method rather than a table of adjectives.

Why "which exchange" is the wrong question until you fix the timeframe

Most comparisons in this category are built on axes that do not move.

Fee schedules barely differ between the major venues, as the table further down shows.

Security pages all say the same words.

Mobile apps all work.

None of those axes explain why two traders with identical accounts get different outcomes in a sector that rotates this fast.

The axis that does explain it is coverage at the tier you actually trade.

If your exchange did not list the token that ran 4x this month, your fee schedule was irrelevant.

A 0% maker rate on a coin you cannot buy is worth exactly nothing.

So the question worth asking is narrower than "which exchange is best for AI tokens."

It is: which exchange covers the tier of AI tokens I actually trade, and can I get in and out at size once I am there.

Where MEXC earns the pick, and what it costs you if you get this wrong

Here is the specific problem MEXC solves for a rotation trader.

When a small-cap AI token starts running and your exchange has not listed it, you have two options and both are bad.

You wait for a listing that may arrive after the move, or you go on-chain, which means a wallet, a bridge or a swap, gas, slippage, and a token contract you have to verify yourself.

MEXC's answer is coverage breadth at the small-cap end plus an on-platform path to assets that have not reached spot yet.

In our sample, MEXC was one of two venues that ranked in the top ten by volume for every token we tested, including UB, where only two of the nine did.

The platform also runs a dedicated AI section on its spot Markets page with its own sector definition and a sector-level 24-hour volume figure, which on 2026-08-24 read 29.10M USDT, up 82.09% on the day.

On the USDT-M futures side, filtering for AI returned 40 AI perpetual contracts on the same date, counted row by row on a single uncut page.

Now the arithmetic.

Take a $5,000 rotation position, in and out.

At MEXC's published spot taker rate of 0.0500% per side, that round trip costs about $5.00.

If the token is not listed on your exchange and you route the same position on-chain at a 1% round-trip assumption, you are at roughly $100 before network gas and before slippage on a thin pool.

That is about a 20-fold difference on a single trade, and it recurs every time the sector rotates into a name your venue does not carry.

Run that four times a quarter and the gap is no longer a rounding error on your fee schedule.

It is the difference between trading the sector and watching it.

Check the AI section and the current rates before you size a position.

You can see MEXC's live spot and futures schedule, including the pair-specific Special Rate tiers, on the official MEXC fee page.

Our method, published in full so you can repeat it

We are showing the method because the conclusion is only worth what the method is worth.

Sample selection

On 2026-08-21 we took CoinGecko's AI category sorted by market cap and picked four tokens spanning two tiers: one sector leader (TAO) and three rotation-tier names (VELVET, UB, KITE).

The measurement

On 2026-08-24 we opened each token's CoinGecko Markets tab, sorted by 24-hour volume, and recorded whether each of the nine exchanges appeared in the top ten venues for that token.

What this measures, and what it does not

This is a liquidity-share measure, not a listing census.

An exchange can list a token and still not rank among its ten highest-volume venues.

Throughout this article, a miss means the venue did not rank among the ten highest-volume venues for that token on that date, and it does not mean the venue does not list it.

What we deliberately excluded

We used only per-coin Markets tab rows.

We did not use CoinGecko's category-level market cap figures, its per-coin "listed on N exchanges" counts, or its generated "where can you buy" text, because we found those three internally inconsistent with each other during checking.

The limits, stated plainly

Four tokens is a small sample.

It is a snapshot of one day, sector coverage changes, and a different four tokens would give somewhat different numbers.

We are publishing it because a small transparent sample beats an unsourced table, not because it settles the question.

We also did not run an equivalent AI-perpetuals count on the other eight venues, so we are not publishing a comparison column we cannot defend.

Coverage data measured 2026-08-24 from each token's CoinGecko Markets tab, ranked by 24-hour volume. Fee data verified as of 2026-08-24 against each platform's official fee schedule, help centre or terms. "Not verified" means the entry-tier rate could not be confirmed from a publicly accessible official page on the retrieval date: Gate's and Kraken's published fee tables did not render, and Coinbase's full schedule requires account sign-in. Rates vary by pair, region and promotion. MEXC rates are from www.mexc.com/fee.

The leader tier hides the difference. The rotation tier reveals it.

Split the same data by tier and the picture sharpens considerably.

On TAO, the $2.16B sector leader, eight of nine venues ranked in the top ten.

That is effectively a tie, and it is why leader-tier coverage is useless as a selection criterion.

On the three rotation-tier names, the field separates: MEXC and Gate at three of three, Bitget at two, Binance, OKX and KuCoin at one each, and Coinbase, Kraken and Bybit at zero.

KITE was the most widely covered rotation name at five venues.

VELVET reached four.

UB reached two.

The smaller the name, the fewer the doors, and that is the tier where your choice of venue actually changes what you can access.

Small cap AI tokens exchange access: read the label carefully

One finding deserves separating out, because it is the kind of thing a coverage table flattens into a single tick mark.

Binance's presence across the rotation tier is not one thing.

It is three different things wearing the same brand name.

On UB, the CoinGecko listing sits under a Binance Alpha Spotlight tag, and Alpha is not the same venue as Binance spot.

On VELVET, there is a Binance futures market, but the venue did not appear in the spot top ten.

On KITE, Binance ranked first among spot venues by volume.

Three tokens, three genuinely different kinds of access, and only one of them is what a retail buyer means when they ask whether an exchange "has" a coin.

Apply the same skepticism everywhere, including here.

When you check whether a platform carries a token, check which product carries it, because a perpetual contract is not a spot listing and an early-access tier is not either.

Listing it and being able to trade it are two different problems

Coverage gets you in the door.

Depth decides what happens when you try to leave.

On 2026-08-24, order book depth within 2% of the mid price on TAO stood at $754,961 at one venue and $21,115 at another.

Same token, same day, roughly a 35-fold difference.

The venue with the thin book was OKX.

The venue with the deep book was Kraken, which ranked for only one of our four sample tokens.

We are pointing that out because it cuts against our own headline finding, and a comparison that only reports the numbers flattering to its conclusion is not worth reading.

Kraken ranked for fewer of our sample tokens, and on the one it did rank for it showed materially deeper liquidity than a venue that ranked for more of them.

The practical reading is that coverage and depth are separate axes, and which one binds depends on your size.

If you trade $500 clips, coverage is your constraint and depth almost never is.

If you trade five figures into a small-cap AI token, check the book before you check the fee, on any platform including this one.

Which exchange lists AI tokens first, and what happens before the listing

Speed of listing is the axis MEXC competes on hardest, and it is worth being precise about what that does and does not mean.

It does not mean a bigger catalogue is automatically better.

A fast listing pipeline and a loose one look identical from outside, and the difference only shows up in what happens to those tokens six months later.

What it does mean is that MEXC's own pipeline is built to shorten the window between a token becoming interesting and becoming buyable, and the three surfaces below are how it does that.

MEXC handles that window with three separate surfaces, and knowing which is which will save you a mistake.

The Innovation Zone

This is where newer and higher-volatility projects list, kept structurally separate from the Main Zone where the established names sit.

The separation is the point: it is a labelled risk tier, not a marketing badge, and the MEXC spot trading zones guide sets out how the zones and their assessment periods work.

Pre-Market Trading

This is an over-the-counter book that lets buyers and sellers trade a token before it is officially listed, with both sides posting collateral against settlement.

It is genuinely useful for getting exposure early and it carries its own distinct risks, which the MEXC Pre-Market trading guide covers in detail.

DEX+

For assets that have not reached any centralised listing, the DEX+ aggregator routes on-chain orders from inside the same account.

That collapses the wallet-and-bridge detour described earlier into a path you already have credentials for.

For a sense of what the sector's project coverage looks like in practice, MEXC Learn's introductions to Gensyn and the $AI token and to DAPPOS and the DOS token are two worked examples.

AI crypto futures and leverage, with the warning attached

Filtering MEXC's USDT-M futures market for AI on 2026-08-24 returned 40 AI perpetual contracts.

Three of them, TAO, LINK and WLD, carried a 300x maximum leverage tag.

Read that number as a risk disclosure rather than a feature.

At 300x, a move of roughly 0.33% against your position is enough to wipe out the margin backing it, before funding costs and before fees.

On small-cap AI tokens, where a 10% intraday range is ordinary and thin books make liquidation cascades faster, high leverage is not an aggressive version of a spot position.

It is a different instrument with a different failure mode.

MEXC's published futures schedule runs 0.000%–0.040% maker and 0.000%–0.100% taker, with a 20% reduction available through MX deduction, and the exact rate depends on the contract.

Two boundaries on the zero-fee language, both stated on MEXC's own fee page: rates can move with platform activity and with your region, and some trading pairs are excluded from MX deduction entirely.

The pair-specific Special Rate tiers are not uniform either.

BTCUSDT futures run 0.000% maker and 0.020% taker, ETHUSDT and GOLD(XAU)USDT run 0.000% and 0.010%, and XRPUSDT and SOLUSDT are listed at zero on both sides.

Check the pair you are actually trading rather than assuming the headline applies to all of them.

What each of the other platforms genuinely does better

Coverage is one axis.

Here is where the rest of the field beats us on theirs.

Coinbase. It is a US-listed public company with the disclosure obligations that come with that, its custody and reporting stack is built for people who need clean records for tax and audit, and its onboarding flow is built around first-time buyers rather than active traders.

Kraken. It posted the deepest TAO book of any venue we measured, roughly 35 times the thinnest, it has been authorised as a crypto-asset service provider by the Central Bank of Ireland since June 2025, and it has been trading publicly since September 2013.

Binance. It consistently reports the highest aggregate spot volume of any venue in this table, its fee tiers scale further down than most for genuinely high-volume traders, and its product range within a single account is among the widest in this table.

OKX. Its 0.08% entry-tier spot maker rate undercuts the 0.10% that most of this table charges, it integrates a self-custody Web3 wallet directly into the same account, and it holds a MiCA authorisation through its Malta entity.

Bybit. Its derivatives engine is built for active perpetuals traders, its perpetual futures taker rate of 0.055% undercuts most of this table, and it publishes monthly proof-of-reserves reports that users can verify with a Merkle check, per Bybit's official proof-of-reserves page, retrieved 2026-08-24.

Gate. It matched MEXC exactly on coverage in our sample, at four of four, including the two hardest names to find, and it operates a 17-tier VIP fee ladder, one of the deepest tier structures in this table.

Bitget. It reached three of four in our sample, copy trading is its flagship product rather than a side feature, and its unified account structure is genuinely well designed.

KuCoin. Its altcoin catalogue runs to over 700 assets, and its KCS fee mechanism returns a share of platform revenue to holders rather than only discounting fees.

The MEXC View

We publish this section because a comparison written by one of the nine platforms in it should say out loud where its own interests sit.

Our position is that AI tokens are a coverage problem before they are a cost problem, and that is a position that happens to favour us.

You should weigh it accordingly, which is exactly why we published the method and the sample size rather than a ranking.

We think the honest version of our pitch is narrow.

If you trade the rotation tier of this sector, breadth of coverage at the small-cap end is the constraint that binds, and that is what we are built for.

Here is where we are not the right answer.

If you need a regulated venue in your own jurisdiction, we are not that, and the compliance section below says so specifically rather than burying it.

If you are buying TAO once and holding it for two years, our coverage advantage is worth nothing to you and you should optimise for custody and reporting instead.

If you move institutional size into a single small-cap name, our depth on that specific pair may or may not be the best available, and you should check the book rather than trust this article.

And if the phrase "300x leverage" reads to you as an opportunity rather than a warning, the most useful thing we can tell you is to stay in spot.

Where to buy AI crypto: who should pick what

If you trade small-cap AI tokens on a weekly rotation, MEXC is your answer.

Coverage at the rotation tier is the binding constraint on that strategy, MEXC was one of two venues ranking for every token in our sample, and the published spot taker rate of 0.0500% is at the low end of the field.

Start with the AI section on the spot Markets page and check the pair-level rate on the fee page before you size anything.

If you buy large-cap AI names and hold, this comparison should not move you.

Eight of nine venues ranked for TAO, which means this tier does not separate the field and you should choose on custody, regulatory status and reporting instead.

For most readers in that position, a platform licensed in your own jurisdiction is the better answer, and we would rather say that than pretend otherwise.

If you trade five-figure clips into single names, check depth first on whichever venue you use.

Our own data found a 35-fold depth spread on one token, and the deeper book belonged to a venue with narrower coverage.

If you are in the United States or the United Kingdom, this comparison is background reading only.

MEXC is not authorised by the financial regulator in either market, and readers there should use a platform authorised by their own regulator.

Nothing in this article is a recommendation to open an account from either jurisdiction.

Risks you should price before you trade this sector

Small-cap concentration risk. The rotation tier of this sector consists of assets in the low hundreds of millions by market cap, where drawdowns of 50% or more are ordinary and recovery is not guaranteed.

Early-listing risk. Innovation Zone, Pre-Market and on-chain assets sit at higher volatility and, in the pre-listing case, carry settlement and counterparty risk that a normal spot trade does not.

Sector concentration risk. AI tokens correlate heavily with each other, so a basket of eight AI names is closer to one position than to eight.

"AI in name only" risk. A token being tagged into an AI category by a data aggregator says nothing about whether the project ships anything, and the tag is applied by the tracker rather than earned by the protocol.

Leverage risk. The 300x tier described above can be liquidated by a sub-1% adverse move, and thin books make that faster on exactly the tokens this article is about.

Liquidity risk. Depth on small-cap pairs can fall away precisely when you need to exit, and the depth figure you checked on entry is not a commitment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best exchange for AI tokens?

MEXC is our top pick within this nine-platform comparison, on the basis that it and Gate were the only venues ranking among the ten highest-volume markets for all four sample AI tokens on 2026-08-24.

Where can I buy AI crypto, and what is the best place to buy AI tokens?

The large-cap AI names rank on nearly every major exchange.

For small-cap AI tokens, coverage narrows sharply, and MEXC and Gate led our four-token sample.

Which exchange lists AI tokens first?

MEXC competes primarily on listing speed, and runs Pre-Market and DEX+ for assets that have not reached spot yet.

Listing speed and listing quality are separate things worth judging separately.

What is the cheapest way to buy AI tokens?

Published entry-tier spot taker rates cluster between 0.0500% and 0.10% at the venues we verified.

The larger cost is usually the on-chain detour when your exchange has not listed the token.

Which exchange is best for small cap AI tokens?

MEXC and Gate each ranked for all three rotation-tier tokens in our sample, Bitget for two, and Coinbase, Kraken and Bybit for none.

See the Innovation Zone guide for how MEXC tiers these listings.

Are AI crypto tokens the same as AI trading bots?

No, AI crypto tokens are assets issued by AI-related projects, while AI trading tools are software features.

MEXC's own tools are covered in how to use MEXC AI.

Can I trade AI crypto futures or AI perpetuals?

Yes, filtering MEXC's USDT-M futures for AI returned 40 AI perpetual contracts on 2026-08-24.

Maximum leverage varies by contract and reached 300x on three of them, which carries a high risk of liquidation.

Do I need KYC to buy AI crypto?

Requirements vary by platform, region and withdrawal size, and rules change.

The MEXC KYC guide sets out the current verification tiers and their limits.

Regional availability and regulatory status

This section is deliberately specific, because a comparison that recommends a platform without stating its regulatory position is not giving you enough to decide with.

United States and United Kingdom

MEXC is not authorised by the financial regulator in either market, and readers there should use a platform authorised by their own regulator.

European Union and EEA

MEXC is not authorised as a crypto-asset service provider under MiCA, and it appears on the register of non-compliant entities that ESMA maintains under Articles 109 and 110, the Dutch Authority for the Financial Markets published a public warning about MEXC on 24 September 2025, and the corresponding entry on the ESMA register records a decision date of 16 September 2025.

The MiCA transitional period ended on 1 July 2026, after which only authorised providers may serve EU and EEA clients.

EU and EEA readers should verify any platform's current status directly in the ESMA MiCA register and, for Dutch readers, the AFM crypto register, and should treat this article as information rather than as an invitation to open an account.

Japan

MEXC Global appears on Japan's Financial Services Agency list of operators warned for conducting crypto-asset exchange business without registration, in a notice dated 28 November 2024, which is published on the FSA crypto-asset policy page.

Japanese readers should weigh that directly when comparing platforms.

Everywhere else

Availability, product access and applicable rates vary by jurisdiction, and you should confirm both your own eligibility and the current terms before funding an account.

Before you trade

Coverage is the axis that decides outcomes in this sector, and it is the axis almost nobody publishes data on.

We published ours, including the sample size, the method and the finding that cut against us.

See the current AI sector markets and the pair-level rates that apply to them.

The MEXC fee page carries the live spot and futures schedule, and MEXC Pre-Market shows which assets are tradable ahead of listing.

This article is for information only and is not investment, tax or legal advice, and it is not a recommendation to buy, sell or hold any asset.

Trading crypto-assets involves substantial risk of loss, and leveraged products can result in losses exceeding your initial margin.

All data is accurate as of the retrieval dates stated and is subject to change, and availability and applicable rates vary by jurisdiction.
