In a time when anyone with a microphone, camera, and social media following can claim spiritual authority, Pastor Kevin P. Horath asks a critical question: What happens when someone claims to speak for God but refuses to answer to anyone? His new book, The Self-Chosen One: When Prophecy Replaces Accountability, addresses this pressing challenge facing today’s Church by encouraging believers to embrace both the power of the Holy Spirit and the protection of biblical accountability.

Rather than dismissing prophetic ministry, Horath offers a thoughtful and balanced approach rooted in Scripture, church history, and nearly three decades of ministry experience. His message is one of discernment, reminding readers that authentic spiritual authority is always accompanied by humility, character, and accountability. “As a pastor, I deeply value the work of the Holy Spirit,” Horath said. “This book is not about rejecting prophecy. It’s about protecting it by restoring it to its proper place within biblical oversight and healthy church leadership.”

Throughout The Self-Chosen One, Horath examines how platform culture and social media have reshaped spiritual influence, often allowing charisma to outpace character and popularity to replace accountability. With pastoral wisdom and personal transparency, he equips readers to recognize genuine prophetic ministry while avoiding the dangers of self-appointed authority. The book covers how to recognize genuine prophetic ministry versus self-appointed authority, why spiritual gifts must function within biblical accountability and church structure, how social media has transformed spiritual influence, the dangers of unchecked charisma and spiritual narcissism, practical ways pastors and leaders can protect their congregations, and how to test prophetic claims without rejecting the work of the Holy Spirit.

What sets the book apart is Horath’s willingness to write from inside ministry, sharing both victories and failures with honesty and grace. “I share my real-life stories, including my failures, to help demonstrate the need for accountability in prophetic ministry,” he explained. “This book blends historical facts, clinical information, personal experience, and biblical studies in an easy-to-read, non-threatening way. I try to avoid extremes and bring a balanced approach to the conversation.”

Horath serves as Lead Pastor of Hillside Bethel Ministries in Decatur, Illinois, where he also oversees Hillside Bethel Christian School. After spending nearly thirty years as a healthcare human resources executive, he followed God’s call into full-time ministry with a passion for helping people apply biblical truth to everyday life. His journey into authorship began during a difficult season of life, when his wife encouraged him to take sermon series notes and create a devotional. “Writing became a way to re-engage with Scripture while working through my own internal struggles. It was therapeutic,” he said.

Although writing has long been a passion, Horath admits that promoting his work has been far more challenging. “For me, writing comes easily. Marketing and selling myself is hard. I’m not a big name or a well-known personality, and I’ve dealt with bouts of imposter syndrome. I’m just not very good at being my own cheerleader.” His love for writing dates back to high school creative writing classes and continued to grow in college through a course titled The Bible as Literature, where he learned to examine Scripture from a literary perspective while deepening his own faith.

When asked who has influenced his writing the most, Horath’s answer is immediate: “My biggest writing inspiration is my wife, Kathy.” That humility is reflected throughout The Self-Chosen One, a book written not to elevate the author but to strengthen the Church. “I want readers to understand that Scripture is still relevant to our lives today,” Horath said. “Although it must always be understood in context, the Bible is full of practical life lessons. Sometimes we simply have to look a little deeper into the stories, culture, and people we find there.”
