BOXABL, a company known for its foldable housing units, has introduced a new concept called Rego-Brix, a modular radiation-shielding system designed to protect lunar habitats from galactic cosmic radiation by using locally sourced moon dirt. The concept was presented in the company’s video, “DON’T DIE ON THE MOON (Part 2) — Rego-Brix by BOXABL,” and is intended to work as a companion to BOXABL’s UFO foldable habitat concept.

Rego-Brix components are foldable and nestable, allowing for efficient transportation from Earth. Once on the moon, they can be filled with lunar regolith — the loose soil and rock covering the lunar surface — to create protective barriers around living quarters. This approach significantly reduces the need to launch heavy shielding materials from Earth, cutting costs and logistical challenges for lunar missions.

The company holds patents related to the Rego-Brix concept and has stated its intention to make the technology available on a royalty-free basis, potentially accelerating its adoption by space agencies and private companies. This move aligns with broader efforts to establish sustainable human presence on the moon, as outlined by NASA’s Artemis program and other international initiatives.

BOXABL is currently completing its merger with FG Merger II Corp. (NASDAQ: FGMC), a special purpose acquisition company. The combined entity is expected to trade on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol BXBL. This merger will provide BOXABL with additional capital to advance its technologies, including the Rego-Brix concept.

The announcement comes as space agencies and private companies ramp up efforts to establish permanent bases on the moon. Radiation shielding is a critical challenge, as the moon lacks a protective atmosphere and magnetic field, exposing habitats to harmful galactic cosmic radiation. Current solutions involve burying habitats under lunar soil or using thick walls, but these require significant construction and material transport. Rego-Brix offers a potentially simpler and more scalable solution.

The concept could also have implications for Earth-based construction. BOXABL’s core business is transforming the housing market with modular building systems like the Casita, a 361-square-foot studio that unfolds on-site in less than an hour. The company also offers the Baby Box, a 120-square-foot unit built to RV code, and is developing stackable models for larger homes. The same foldable, fillable technology could be adapted for disaster relief or remote construction on Earth.
