Republicans admit Trump is turning the midterms into a 'funeral'

Republicans are getting worn down by the expectation of serious losses in November, says former Republican strategist Rick Wilson.

“The mood from Republicans that I've talked to in the last few weeks is funereal,” said Wilson, a Lincoln Project co-founder who worked for the George H.W. Bush's campaign. “Behind [House Speaker] Mike Johnson's bluster they're running the on a message strategy. But behind that bluster, their rank-and-file members are desperate for Trump to shut up. They are desperate for him to stop doing insane things. They are desperate for him to stop picking fights with the Pope and invading countries and doing the things that have led them into this economic box canyon that they can't get out of.”

Wilson told MS NOW anchor Katy Tur that Republicans are having to go back home to constituents, but they having nothing to tell them about.

“They don't have a bill to brag about. They can't go home and say, ‘yeah, by the way, I cut Elon Musk's taxes and you got $300. Sorry about your gas bill and your health care bill and everything else. They are really on very thin ice because they recast themselves a long time ago, … as people who are there for Donald Trump. And as Trump becomes more deranged and more incompetent and more dangerous and that the consequences of his policies … start to impact them harder and harder, it's much more difficult for these Republicans to say, ‘oh, here's why you should send me and a Republican majority back to DC.”

Punchbowl News Co-founder Jake Sherman said he wasn’t sure how Republicans win an election like this while at war.

“You have sky high gas and you're talking about your only achievement is … an 18-month-old tax bill where you got $350 more that gets wiped away by the gas bill, and potentially by health care costs,” said Sherman. “ … What are you going home and talking about?”
