The American Heart Association announced today that Bradley A. Maron, M.D., FAHA, a leading researcher in pulmonary vascular disease, will assume the role of editor-in-chief of Circulation, the Association’s flagship peer-reviewed journal. Maron succeeds Joseph A. Hill, M.D., FAHA, who led the journal since 2016, and Joseph Loscalzo, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, who served from 2004 to 2016. The appointment signals a continued commitment to publishing rigorous, practice-changing science for clinicians, researchers, and healthcare professionals worldwide.
Maron is a board-certified clinical cardiologist and distinguished researcher whose work spans basic, translational, clinical, and population health. He is globally recognized for advances in pulmonary hypertension, right heart failure, and cardiomyopathy. Currently, he serves as senior associate dean for precision medicine, director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center, and the Melvin Sharovsky Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He also co-executive directs the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing. Previously, he held faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School and served as a visiting professor at Imperial College London.
Under Maron’s leadership, Circulation will introduce several new features aimed at improving accessibility and transparency. These include a Clinician Lighthouse article for expert-guided interpretation of diagnostic tests, a Clinician’s Corner for real-world clinical practice, and a Patient’s Corner to present key content to the public and patient community. The journal will also implement graphic abstracts for all research articles, video commentaries for select manuscripts, and a streamlined submission process with accelerated review timelines. Expanded weekly electronic table of contents alerts with brief summaries will help readers stay informed.
“Dr. Maron’s appointment underscores the American Heart Association’s commitment to advancing transformative science shaping the future of cardiovascular medicine,” said Shelley Miyamoto, M.D., FAHA, chair of the Association’s Scientific Publishing Committee. “His vision, scientific breadth and dedication to robust research and innovation position Circulation for optimal success in its next chapter of influence and impact.”
Maron expressed deep honor in taking on the role, stating, “I am energized to forge a new path for the journal that strengthens and expands on the legacy and success of the editors before me. Our mission is to reinvigorate the type of cardiovascular science and medicine published in Circulation, and fast track that information to our readers with additional transparency.”
The new editorial team includes Executive Editor Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, and Deputy Executive Editor Sadiya S. Khan, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA. Ten deputy editors will oversee specific topic sections, including fundamental sciences, translational science, clinical cardiology, clinical trials, community health, population health, global cardiovascular health, and AI for process and science. Notable appointments include Joseph C. Wu, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, a past president of the Association, and P. Gabriel Steg, M.D., from Université de Paris-Cité.
Circulation remains editorially independent, as do all 14 journals in the American Heart Association portfolio. The Association, which receives more than 85% of its revenue from non-corporate sources, ensures that its scientific content is not influenced by donations. More financial information is available here.
Maron’s scientific impact includes co-authoring more than 260 publications, serving as primary investigator for federally funded research for over two decades, and holding six patents. His editorial experience spans multiple top-tier journals, including The Lancet, The New England Journal of Medicine, and JAMA: Cardiology. The full list of new features and editorial board members is available on the American Heart Association’s news release page.
