Cloudflare has opened the waitlist for Monetization Gateway, a new product that lets developers charge for web pages, datasets, APIs, and MCP tools.

Summary
  • Cloudflare’s Monetization Gateway will let developers charge for web pages, APIs, datasets, and MCP tools.
  • Payments will settle in stablecoins through x402, an open protocol built around HTTP 402 requests.
  • The product targets AI agents that need fast, usage-based access without accounts or subscriptions online.

The internet infrastructure company says the product will settle payments in stablecoins through x402, an open protocol built for web-based payments.

Meanwhile, the Cloudflare Monetization Gateway is designed to place payment rules in front of digital resources protected by Cloudflare. Developers will be able to set access rules for specific pages, API routes, datasets, or tools. Cloudflare said the product will handle payment checks at the edge, before a request reaches the customer’s origin server.

The company said the gateway will give customers one control panel for payment policies and access controls. It will also support usage-based pricing. Cloudflare gave examples such as charging per API request, setting variable prices for compute-heavy tasks, or charging only unauthenticated users.

Cloudflare brings x402 payments into HTTP requests

Payments will settle through x402, a protocol that uses the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code. A client requests a paid resource. The server returns a price and payment instructions. The client then pays and sends the request again with proof of payment.

Cloudflare said the process does not require a checkout page or a separate payment API. The company is aiming for “sub-second payment settlement” and says sellers will be able to receive stablecoins directly in their wallets or redeem them for fiat. It also said buyers can access paid resources with “no signup, no API key, no prior relationship required.”

AI agents shape the product

Cloudflare framed the launch around a shift in web traffic from people to AI agents. It said agents do not view ads or keep subscriptions in the same way humans do. Instead, they may need to pay for a single data feed, search, API call, or tool request.

The launch follows earlier work between Cloudflare and Coinbase. As reported by crypto.news, Coinbase and Cloudflare launched the x402 Foundation to promote real-time stablecoin payments for AI agents, apps, and businesses. The foundation aims to make x402 a common payment layer for online services.

Crypto.news also explained that AI agents can use x402 to pay for online resources with stablecoins without a credit card, account, or manual approval. That model fits Cloudflare’s new gateway, which turns access to a web resource into a paid request.

Stablecoin payment race grows

The Cloudflare waitlist adds another large infrastructure company to the AI payments market. Amazon Bedrock AgentCore added Coinbase x402 so AI agents can pay for services in USDC without human input. That report said the system runs on Base and supports fast, low-cost payments.

Other networks have also moved into machine payments. Previously, Solana and Google Cloud launched Pay.sh, a stablecoin payment gateway for AI agents using APIs on a per-request basis. The service supports small payments and avoids standard accounts, API keys, and monthly plans.

Cloudflare’s product remains in waitlist mode, so full public use has not started. The company said the gateway will initially support stablecoin payments and let customers manage rules through the dashboard, Cloudflare API, or Terraform. The launch shows that stablecoins are moving deeper into web infrastructure as AI agents create demand for small, automated payments.

CRCL Selloff Explained: Russell Growth Removal and Open USD Pressure Reprice Circle’s Stablecoin Story

CRCL Selloff Explained: Russell Growth Removal and Open USD Pressure Reprice Circle’s Stablecoin Story

Circle Internet Group ($CRCL) came under pressure after being removed from several Russell Growth-related benchmarks during the latest Russell reconstitution. The index move matters because many passive funds, benchmark-aware portfolios, and rules-based institutional mandates use Russell indexes as part of their portfolio construction. When a stock leaves a widely followed benchmark, some investors may need to rebalance exposure, even if their long-term view of the company has not changed. But the Russell adjustment is only one part of the story. The deeper issue is that the market is reassessing Circle’s identity as a public stock. Is CRCL still being valued as a high-growth crypto infrastructure leader, or is the market starting to treat it more like a financial infrastructure company whose economics depend on interest rates, reserve income, stablecoin distribution, and competitive pressure? That debate became more urgent after the launch of Open USD, a new stablecoin initiative backed by a consortium involving major payments and crypto players, including Visa, Mastercard, and Coinbase. Reuters reported that Open Standard brings together more than 140 businesses and plans to issue Open USD, a U.S.-dollar-pegged stablecoin expected to go live later this year. For traders, the key question is whether the recent CRCL selloff is mostly technical index-related pressure, or whether it marks a broader valuation reset for the first major stablecoin stock.
