Pre-Market Briefing on Oct 28: Dow Flat, Nasdaq Up 1.18% — Is AI Compute Draining the Market's Liquidity?

1. Today's Market: The Money Went to AI and Chips While the Dow Barely Moved

Unit: %, single-day change on October 27; all three readings are positive, so the zero line sits at the left edge and every bar runs right on one shared scale. The Nasdaq reads +1.18%, the S&P 500 +0.60% and the Dow +0.03%.

The three indexes rose together and still finished 1.15 percentage points apart, and that spread is the day's conclusion: what rose was not the market but the part of it carrying the most technology. The Nasdaq closed at 26,477.81 and the Dow at 52,377.57, up just 0.03% on the session, with industrials and energy holding it in place.

What actually moved that day was compute. CoreWeave closed at $59.57, up 7.94%, and Micron at $928.76, up 2.77%. Robinhood closed at $94.56, up 1.85%, then reported third-quarter earnings of $0.60 per share after the close, above the roughly $0.56 expected, while revenue of $1.42B came in a little under the roughly $1.44B expected. The closing price does not include after-hours moves, so the two belong in separate columns.

2 Stock in Focus: All Six Large-Cap AI Compute Stocks Rose, and the Two Ends Finished 4.55 Percentage Points Apart

Unit: %. These six stocks are grouped by hand as large-cap AI compute peers rather than by industry field; all six readings are positive, so the zero line sits at the left edge and the bars share one scale. AMD sits at one end on +5.45% and Nvidia at the other on +0.90%.

The point of this session is not that one stock rose, it is that the whole row rose by very different amounts: the two ends finished 4.55 percentage points apart, with AMD furthest and Nvidia barely keeping up. Two averages have to be kept apart here. These six averaged +3.38%, while the semiconductor industry as a whole averaged +1.09% on the day. The denominators differ, so neither figure can stand in for the other, and AMD's 4.36 percentage points of excess is measured against the industry average.

AMD closed at $560.26, adding about $47.3B to a $914.6B market value in a single session. What drove it was something specific: Meta has installed and is testing AMD's Helios rack-scale system, and will receive an Instinct GPU customised for its own workloads. The weight of that sentence is in the unit of purchase: the customer moves from buying a few chips at a time to buying a whole rack. ⚠ The release describes gigawatt-scale infrastructure but lists no wattage and no GPU count, and the deployment schedule is left for later, so the direction is confirmed while the amount is not. Alongside it, Super Micro, which assembles rack-scale systems, rose 7.34% with no company announcement of its own.

Five Dimensions: Four Corners High, Volatility Control Weakest at 22

Unit: 0 to 100, against peers and its own one-year history, measured over a one-year window rather than the single session. Peer rank reads 100, valuation heat 95, trend position 79, relative strength 72, and the weakest, volatility control, reads 22.

Four corners sit high and the fifth drops towards the centre, and the chart is describing two sides of the same thing. Peer rank at 100 says the stock stands at the front of this group, and trend position at 79 matches a price sitting at 79% of its 52-week range. Valuation heat at 95 is about the industry rather than the stock: it measures how high the sector's current valuation sits against its own history, and on this dimension a higher score means more expensive, so a near-full corner is not good news. The one to read beside it is volatility control at 22, where a lower score means wider swings, and the beta on the card is 2.45. For a stock with a beta of 2.45 and volatility control at 22, a 5.45% session already sits inside its own distribution. The same piece of news lands as a smaller move in a steadier company.

3. What to Watch Tonight: Microsoft, and Whether Azure Reaches About 45%

  • At 12:30|US September trade balance and wholesale inventories Both are second-tier readings, and they land an hour before the U.S. market opens
  • At 18:00|Federal Reserve rate decision The chair's press conference follows at 18:30; both fall during the U.S. session rather than before it
  • After the close at 20:00|Microsoft (MSFT) FY27Q1, the quarter ended September 30, with the call at 21:30
  • Reporting alongside it Alphabet (GOOGL), third quarter, also after the close
  • This week's real direction comes later Third-quarter GDP's first estimate and the September core PCE both land at 12:30 on Thursday, with Amazon, Intel and Coinbase reporting after that day's close

Unit: %, year-on-year growth in Azure and other cloud services revenue on the company's own basis; all four bars are drawn from zero on one shared scale. FY26Q2 reads 39%, FY26Q3 40% and FY26Q4 43%, while the roughly 45% for FY27Q1 is company guidance.

  • Why Azure rather than total revenue Total revenue carries Windows licensing and gaming, which are not growing. Last quarter the three segments were Intelligent Cloud at $39.3B, up 32%, Productivity and Business Processes at $37.8B, up 14%, and More Personal Computing at $12.9B, down 4%. The company as a whole took $90B, up 18%, but almost all of the growth sits in one segment, and Azure is the line where AI compute demand turns directly into money
  • ⚠ The fourth bar is guidance rather than a result, and it is measured differently The first three are reported results and include currency effects, while the fourth is the company's July guidance for this quarter on a constant-currency basis, and the two bases have historically differed by about one percentage point. For Intelligent Cloud as a whole the company guided to about $41.1B, up 33% to 34%
  • One percentage point changes the story Last quarter came in at 43% and this quarter is guided to about 45%. Reaching it reads as still accelerating; falling a little short reads as a peak. The value of this line is not the level but whether it matches the number the company gave itself. The other number to watch is capital spending, guided above $50B this quarter against $41B last quarter including finance leases, which decides how much depreciation and leasing take out of margins

4. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: AMD rose 5.45%. Was that the chip sector or the company?
A: Both, but they have to be measured separately. The semiconductor industry averaged +1.09% on the day, so the backdrop was helpful, and these six large-cap AI compute stocks averaged +3.38%, clearly ahead of the industry. AMD's +5.45% then ran 4.36 percentage points beyond the industry average, and that last stretch is the company's own, matching the news that Meta has installed and is testing its rack-scale system. To judge whether a stock is following its backdrop or moving on its own, first check whose denominator the average you are quoting is built on.

Q: Is valuation heat at 95 a good thing?
A: No. That dimension measures how high the industry's current valuation sits against its own history, and a higher score means more expensive, so a near-full corner means the sector is priced close to its own ceiling. It is not the same as peer rank at 100: rank describes where this stock stands inside the group, valuation heat describes the price level of the whole group. Put that beside volatility control at 22 and a beta of 2.45. The chart then says this: the company ranks at the front of its set, its sector is not cheap, and its swings are wider than its peers'.

Q: The stock rose 5.45% on only 0.85 times average volume. What does that mean?
A: The volume multiple is the day's volume divided by average volume. AMD traded 20.49M shares against an average of 24.05M, which works out at 0.85 times. Above 1 means busier than usual; below 1 means the gain was completed on less turnover. For comparison, on the same day Cipher Mining ran at 1.26 times and CoreWeave at 1.53 times, so three rising stocks differed by close to double in the turnover behind the move. Read the volume multiple alongside the gain. The same percentage can be produced by many hands or by few, and those two do not tend to behave the same way afterwards.

DeFi Price Manipulation Attacks Hit 43 in 2026

DeFi price manipulation attacks have reached a new reported annual high in 2026, exposing persistent weaknesses in how decentralized financial protocols value assets, manage collateral, and respond to abnormal market conditions. According to DefiLlama data cited by RootData and other industry publications, 43 price manipulation incidents had been recorded by October 21, surpassing the previous full-year high of 27 incidents in 2022. Reported losses associated with the 2026 incidents totaled approximately $199 million, although their distribution reveals a more complex security picture than the headline count suggests
