According to Humanity Protocol, hackers were able to steal more than $36 million worth of H tokens, upgrade contracts, and gain control of bridges after compromising an employee’s laptop.

On Tuesday, the protocol announced that the H token on Ethereum and BNB Chain was impacted by the assault that happened on Monday. An assault took over the bridge administration on both networks when the team discovered that three out of six Gnosis Safe owner keys were compromised.

Investigates Multisig Key Compromise

Attackers, once in charge, allegedly altered the bridge contracts to include new, harmful versions, according to Humanity. They spent almost 141.2 million tokens on Ethereum. They also created a feature to BSC that allowed them to produce an infinite supply of tokens, and then they sent 200,000,000 tokens to their personal wallet.

Despite the fact that the project used multisignature controls distributed among four people, some keys may have been exposed during setup, according to Humanity founder Terence Kwok. According to him, most of Humanity’s tokens are held in a licensed custodian’s vault, while its operations are held in an MPC vault.

However, he did mention that certain contracts had their multisig keys put up in one location and subsequently distributed, with some keys being backed up on a compromised device.

This event exemplifies how some authorities’ concentration on a limited set of keys may transform a hacked endpoint into a protocol-level problem. Humanity has announced that it has blocked access to the impacted bridges for deposits and withdrawals, and that it is collaborating with relevant parties to assess the situation, find ways to recover, and minimize harm.

As soon as the Humanity Protocol team revealed the private key breach, the H token’s value dropped by more than 85 percent. Users should avoid the bridge and liquidity pools, Kwok said at the time.
